What is Town Chinese Food? It refers to popular Chinese restaurants rooted in local communities, often called local Chinese eateries or Chinese food shops (according to Wikipedia). This term seems to have emerged relatively recently and is not very familiar to many, but we all know these places that have stood the test of time, often found in residential neighborhoods or along main roads. Sometimes you might stumble upon a shop that looks worn out and greasy, far from what one would consider clean, but that only adds to its charm. Dishes prepared quickly and skillfully by the friendly older staff, with simple and sometimes heavily seasoned flavors, evoke tastes I’ve cherished since childhood. Yes, I absolutely love such flavors above all else. Today, just like any other day, I find myself at a town Chinese food spot. 'Marucho' Located in Tokuma, Nagano City, along Wakatsuki Boulevard, this well-loved town Chinese restaurant might be related to the similarly named establishments in Nakano and Suzaka. If it is indeed connected, I should be trying their tsukemen, but since I just had that yesterday, I’ll choose something else today. Technically, this place doesn't have a set meal menu—ordering rice with an a la carte item turns it into a set meal. Naturally, I should choose a signature dish of town Chinese food. 'Leek and Liver Stir-fry Set Meal with Medium Rice' JPY 1070 This dish features a generous mix of vegetables including bean sprouts, cabbage, bell pepper, onion, and plenty of garlic chives, all providing a satisfying crunch, complemented by the rich flavor of pork liver. This is truly a classic dish. Delicious, delicious, delicious! I happily pile it on my rice and savor every bite. Simply wonderful!
