Sherut Leumi is voluntary national service that takes the place of army service. Israeli citizens who get an army exemption and non-Israeli citizens who volunteer are both eligible.

Benefits
Bnot Sherut are entitled to a number of benefits including:

• Monthly stipend for necessities.(Amount varies on location and place of service.)
• Apartment housing in the city where they are serving.
• Bus pass (inter-city and intra-city).
• Discounts at restaurants, movie theatres and cell phone companies (same discounts as soldiers).

Living Arrangements
Most "Bnot Sherut" live in apartments together in the city where they serve.

Social Programs
There are frequent social activities such as weekend getaways, shabbatonim, tours, learning programs, parties for the chagim, etc.

Learning Programs
Weekly shiurim are often available.

General Information

• One need not make Aliyah to do Sherut Leumi. It can be done on a tourist visa, but the Misrad Hapnim will issue a special volunteer visa that lasts as long as the person will be doing their service. However, if the volunteer leaves the country for any reason during that time, she will need to get a NEW visa upon her return.
• Bnot Sherut who have Israeli citizenship receive a grant at the end of the year. One who does Sherut Leumi as a tourist is not eligible for the grant, but if she declares citizenship at any point during the year of sherut, she WILL get the grant.
• For those interested in making Aliyah afterwards, Bnot Sherut are still eligible for the Sal Klita. While she is doing her service, the "clock is frozen." This means that the time of service is not taken into consideration when calculating the amount of time spent in Israel before declaring Aliyah.
• In order to ensure that the clock is indeed "frozen,"  the Bat Sherut MUST get a certificate of completion. In order to get this certificate, she must meet the number of days and hours required. (Twelve full months of service, 40 hours a week. The year begins around Sept.1, when schools begin. She does get some vacation days and sick days. If she takes a sick day, she MUST get an ishur from the doctor.)
