Django - Italo-Western-Box (3 DVDs, + Audio-CD)
10.000 dollari per un massacro Execution Per 100,000 dollari ti ammazzo
Firstly,
10.000 dollari per un massacro
is the only
Django
film
in this Boxset but two of the films star Gianni Garko (Gary
Hudson) who plays
Django in
10.000 dollari per un massacro.
Execution and
Per 100,000 dollari ti
ammazzo are similar and a typical spaghetti western but are not
part of the
Django
film legacy.
But still, Koch Media have gone all out on this new Italo-Western Boxset with three late 60's films including one from the multitude of Django westerns that exist. Plus they have included a nice booklet (in German) and a CD of the original music from 10.000 dollari per un massacro. These highly stylized films have been transferred beautifully to the digital medium. They look quite spectacular! You should disregard the description on the outside of the box as it makes no mention of optional English subtitles - which this set most definitely does have... along with original Italian audio and an optional German DUB (and removable German subtitles). Sergio Corbucci directed Franco Nero in the movie Django in 1966. It was so popular that dozens of incarnations surfaced in the next 10 years. The loner brooding bounty hunter with unfathomable gunslinger skill was a huge hit and numerous actors took to the role from Terence Hill to Gianni Garko (Gary Hudson). These Italian western genre films have a faithful following, and with good reason. They establish characterizations early and the plots involve vengeance, thieves and a deeply entrenched code of honor or mercenary foothold - they express a purposeful western appeal. These three films are quintessential examples. BOTTOM LINE: Koch Media appear to be trying to capitalize on the Django name (although we know in Germany this has a more generic term for this entire genre) - the boxset should rightly be called only "Italo-Western Film Collection'. I think this set still has good value and is exceptionally mastered. If these films had been 'essential Django' as opposed to 'quintessential spaghetti western' it would definitely be in the running for DVD Boxset of the Year. The transfers are that good. NOTE: The Per 100,000 dollari ti ammazzo disc is labeled as 'Django - the Bastard' (Django il bastardo) which is a totally different film with Antonio De Teff playing Django, but in Germany Per 100,000 dollari ti ammazzo is also known by that title. |

Django is hunting the bandit Manuel, because there's a price on his head. But when he meets Manuel, he joins his gang instead for a robbery. Yes, this the world of spaghetti westerns where the lines between Good, Bad and Ugly are thin, indeed. Manuel kills Django's girlfriend (Loredana Nusciak, known from the original "Django"), which sets Django's mind back on his original idea of bounty hunting... This movie is quite obviously inspired by "Django", although it's not an official sequel. Shot just one year later, it casts Loredana Nusciak in a similar part, and Gianni Garko looks more like Franco Nero than like himself in other movies. If you remember Garko as the screaming lunatic in "Mille dollari sul nero", or as the gambler and gunman with all the funny lines in "Buon funerale amigos", he proves to be versatile as an actor here. If you are into Italian westerns, you won't be disappointed by this movie. Only silly thing: Claudio Camaso (as Manuel) put on so much mascara like he was going to play the baddie in a silent movie.

Sharp, anamorphic, tight to the frame edges, progressive, correct aspect ratio, clear original audio and a great featurette (optionally subtitled in German and English) that is more about Garko than Django - this is a very good transfer and excellent start to the boxset. I see no evidence of any digital manipulations. Gianni Garko (Gary Hudson) is a decent Django and I'm sure fans will not be disappointed. Koch Media have risen to our expectations in this first disc of the collection. |

Again, this is not a Django film. John Coler (John Richardson) goes undercover and finds employment with a theatrical group that stages duels for audiences. He is seeking a bounty on Clint regarding a 20,000 dollar gold premium, but gets caught up in the torture chamber of a money-greedy Mexican bandit named Sancho. More spaghetti western adventure with greed and avarice as the focal leaning...

Equally as sharp as 10.000 dollari per un massacro but there is a slim black border framing the image limiting full horizontal resolution. Colors seem a little 'funky' at times but I can only surmise what they should have appeared as. No extras but a trailer and an image gallery. John Richardson plays a character very similar to Django and the films stylistic qualities are in the upper berth of this genre of films. |

Johnny Forest, bounty hunter, attempts to carry out his mother's dying wish that he bring in his outlaw brother, Clint, alive. On the run from Jurago, a former partner he has crossed, Clint accepts Johnny's help, and agrees to surrender ..... for now. Not a Django film but a decent spaghetti western with a lot of the genre appeal.
NOTE: Another of the 2 non-Django films in the boxset.

'Mondo Garko 2' (28:42) |
Comments: |
An equally as impressive image in this transfer, but again we have a slim black border framing the image limiting full horizontal resolution. It still looks quite sharp with an accurate widescreen aspect ratio and good removable subtitles. Extras include part 2 of 'Garko's World' with trailers and an image gallery. Fans of this genre have to be pretty impressed with the quality of this DVD and the entire Boxset, its just a shame that they misrepresented the content in the title. |
