Vance (Republican), who was first elected in 2022, was elected as Vice President on 5 November 2025. Governor Michael "Mike" DeWine (Republican) will make an appointment to fill the vacant seat when Senator J.D. Vance resigns. "The appointee shall hold office until the 15th day of December succeeding the next regular state election that occurs more than 180 days after the vacancy ... At that next regular state election, a special election to fill the vacancy shall be held..."
