A British soldier has died after an explosion in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has said. The soldier, from 3 Rifles, was on foot patrol near Sangin, in Helmand province on Friday morning when the blast occurred. His family have been told. The MoD says his death was not connected to Operation Moshtarak, the Nato offensive in southern Afghanistan. The death brings the number of British military personnel killed on operations in Afghanistan since 2001 to 269. Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said the soldier, whose identity has not yet been released, "died in the course of his duty and among his comrades". "He will be sorely missed and we will remember him," Lt Col Wakefield added. It is the second fatality to hit 3 Rifles in the past week. On Tuesday, Corporal Richard Green, 23, from Reading, was shot dead while at a checkpoint near Sangin.
