Quite fun.

The concept of the film is just evil Superman, nothing more, nothing less. That combination of superhero and horror is quite original, despite all the other references to horror films. I also see about 10-15 names here that shoot out in just about every direction, and although I can imagine something with every name, I wouldn't want to put any of them next to Brightburn as a direct comparison. You also have to want to see originality.

Didn't read anything about it beforehand, so it was fun to discover the Superman link in the film itself. The first half of the film is fairly tame, but builds up nicely. The evil that manifests itself in Brandon could have been a bit firmer, but when it comes to full blast halfway through, I was really looking forward to it.

Unfortunately, the film falls silent after that. There may be two brutal horror scenes, but Brandon's relationship with his parents remains a bit on the spot, so he never really "bad". That's where some drama comes in that gets in the way of the serious horror, making the second part a bit cowardly at times. They try to rectify that at the end, but that's just a little too late.

But otherwise a great video. As a crossover they might think of Thelma & Brandon, both have to deal with the same father trauma, both films can also learn something from each other. Amusing cameo from Rooker at the end by the way.

3.5*

More fun than expected. I don't have much with superhero films, both the Marvel vehicles and the more alternative attempts (a Chronicle for example), I usually find it a bit bland and boring. Brightburn mainly brightens things up by adding a good dose of raw horror to the otherwise rather silly superhero happening. Initially it is still a bit of a cliché, but after half an hour the film gets into a nice gear where some gore is not shunned. Enough scenes that the horror enthusiast can enjoy, I think, most have already been mentioned.

In the run-up to the end, the somewhat obligatory drama does indeed get in the way of the genre fun, causing the film to lose its nice flow a little bit. Fortunately, it is not too bright and the end scene is again as it should be.

As mentioned before, of course it remains a bit too good in terms of actual 'evil'. Not that I expected otherwise, but it's still a shame that films like this never really dare to look for boundaries, while the set-up should offer all the freedom to do so. Well, I still had a lot of fun with it. Small 3.5*.

We Need To Talk About Clark Kent. 'Brightburn' (2019) is actually quite a cool spin on both the superhero genre and films about growing serial killers. Or how Tori (Elizabeth Banks) and Kyle Breyer (David Denman) are the ideal parents to raise adoptive son Brandon (Jackson A. Dunn). He's actually not such a difficult boy and he even seems more adapted and brave than his peers. But what if you flip the superhero convention of the alien savior and superpowers are more likely to induce perversion and lust for power? Also villainous because you don't follow Brandon's coming of age (his motives are crystal clear after all), but precisely the dormant realization in the adoptive parents that they are losing their influence. That sweet little boy from yesteryear can't just disappear!? However, we can already see the inevitable things Brandon has set in motion while his parents are still diligently looking for ways to turn the tide. It makes 'Brightburn' (2019) an uncompromising train disaster whose fun is more in how it unfolds than in the surprises you encounter along the way.
