As If I Am Not There plot

The story of the harsh reality during the Bosnian War in the 1990s. The story is based on true facts, which were revealed at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Samira was a teacher from Sarajevo at the time, who took a job in a village just as the war broke out. When Serbian soldiers overpower the village, they kill the men and keep the older women for labor, and the younger ones as sex objects. Samira is subjected to the lowest form of treatment imaginable.

A film that cuts through your heart and soul. When I saw so much brutal violence against defenseless women and girls, I felt a sense of vicarious shame. You know that such practices take place every day during a war, but in the reporting of a war they are wrongly only minor comments in the margins.

Nastasa Petrovic plays an incredibly beautiful leading role. The humiliations and the mental and physical misery she undergoes are constantly visible on her face. The title of the film is compellingly illustrated during and after the raw rape scene.

A compliment to director Juanita Wilson for the subdued presentation, without any pomp or sensationalism, of a difficult to digest subject. A disgusting drama.
I think The Stoning of Soraya M. is a horrible film, but this one comes pretty close.

Genuine drama with strong playing from Natasa Petrovic. But actually everyone plays very believably. Good to see up close what that war meant for the population.

Horrible, but also honest. It was almost impossible to swallow, so confrontational. But it was also necessary to tell the stories of these people.

"It's my brother's friend," says the girl, but in a civil war that doesn't count. A little later one of the cruelest scenes of the film, with the young girl, still a child...

Tough film, based on later testimonies, which portrays inhuman acts, unfortunately typical of any war.

We follow the ordeal of a young teacher as well as her attempts to improve her fate and that of her fellow prisoners.

The ending of the film, with the main interpreter, Natrasa Pertovic, often in close-up, is of a different nature, when human emotions have to fight against disgust and revenge. It is no small thing to find yourself in such a state with thoughts about the past and the future in your mind.
