Very nice Korean.

Things are going a little better with the best man. His previous film was a much needed bright spot after a few lesser films, with Umimachi Diary he continues that positive evolution.

I think it's one of his gentlest movies, in fact one of the sweetest I've ever seen. Really everything in this movie is tuned or goodness, optimism and positivism. Something you rarely come across.

Not a big drama, even though there is enough room for it in the plot. But everyone is open-hearted, understanding and kind to each other. And if that's not the case, then the next scene is already solved.

I like these kinds of videos, if only because they are so extremely rare. Strong, extremely solid Koreeda.

4.0* and a detailed review

Beautiful film in that typical wonderfully rippling tempo of Koreeda without it becoming long-winded. Oatwise, the film suddenly seems to take a dramatic turn, but fortunately that quickly fades into the background and Koreeda remains interested in the lives of the four girls and their relationship (although the second hour is slightly less pleasant because of that). That makes for great scenes, especially when the sisters are a bit annoyed with each other. It feels real in everything. Beautifully acted in which each sister can show her own personality. Also some wonderfully dreamy images on the bike and the spring blossom on the trees and also some fine images of a big city. With so much sweetness you can call this bigoted, but sometimes I need this. 4.0*.

Umimachi Diary

Nice movie from Koreeda. In a slow and calm way, he manages to portray the world of three sisters who take in their younger half-sister Suzu. You expect something dramatic to happen at any moment, but Koreeda holds back and focuses on the relationship between the four sisters.

They have to deal with setbacks and personal problems, but it remains manageable and nowhere does Koreeda choose false sentiment or over the top plot developments. The director shows that you don't need much to deliver an interesting film. The last scene between Sachi and Suzu on top of the mountain is a gem, and it actually has everything that makes Umimachi Diary such a strong film.
