"An amazing true story of survival."
Le Ly lives in a Vietnamese village that alternates between the visits of the Viet Cong and American and South Vietnamese advisers. The South Vietnamese torture her and the Viet Cong propagandists rape her. One day, Le Ly flees to Saigon with her mother. There she becomes pregnant by a rich man, who then abandons her, so that in order to survive she has to beg and ends up in prostitution. As a streetwalker she meets the American Steve Butler who wishes to have her by his side not as a prostitute but as a woman. He is good-natured, understanding, persistent, but in her desperate situation, the meaning of his statement 'I want an Asian woman' does not reach her.

Still an impressive war drama, especially the part in Vietnam (which also looked very nice). The story is well put together and sure to keep you interested. Sometimes the film is even gripping and moving. The cast did well, especially Hiep Thi Le who played well and convincingly. The film is quite long, but it doesn't get boring at all. By the way, it's been almost 20 years since I last saw this movie, so it's time to review it again.

Final part of Stone's trilogy about the Vietnam War, after Platoon and Born on the 4th of July. The worst movie of the three. Because the melodrama doesn't stick enough and why? Despite the many harsh and dramatic events in the life of a simple Vietnamese country girl in times of war, the film struggles to move. Is this due to the high tempo? Maybe. The events follow each other at a rapid pace, despite the film being 140 minutes long. But everything is too thick on it, as if someone is sticking up a placard that says "please cry". The misery is unnaturally magnified, the dialogues are sometimes very weak ("I need a good oriental woman") and the film sometimes sinks into a sentimental dragon. Nevertheless, the very beautiful photography deserves a big compliment: visually this film offers beautiful shots. It could have been more.

A fine film about the start and consequence of the interference of France, China and the USA. The Russians were also involved in the Vietnam War with the arms trade. The film is mainly set before and during the interference of the Americans who would avert the "Communist danger" after the French. Finally, these also dropped in 1975. Both sides were quite aggressive and that is also shown in this film. Whatever side you were on (or neutral), it was never good for the citizens.
A heavy film now and then and even after the protagonists had left for America, their lives remained a powder keg. A 7.5 for the movie!
