Another entertaining film by Hitchcock, not a masterpiece but thoroughly entertaining. The story is well thought out and exciting. But it still loses to other top hits from Hitchcock. There are some really strong parts in the film. For example the chase scene was a lot of fun. A bit ugly, but that's not so strange considering the time. Also very funny to see how they have used Americans for the roles of the Dutch. Occasionally it seemed as if they spoke Frisian instead of Dutch, and often also some German. But I did hear a few flowing sentences with a funny accent.

Cast is nothing to complain about. And the music is also very good.

4*

Hitchcock would have liked a stronger cast and was disappointed that Gary Cooper had dropped the lead. Cooper would later admit that he shouldn't have turned down the role, as the highly topical, suspenseful story and the combination of light-hearted romance, action and intrigue make this one of the best Hitchcock films, even if it has always remained in the shadow of the commercially more successful Rebecca. Forget the phonetically (and virtually unintelligible) murmuring of the "Dutch" children and police officers and enjoy the intriguing plot and some of the most sensational scenes from the Hitchcock canon: an assassination attempt in Amsterdam, a chase across the Kinderdijk and a spectacular plane crash. Albert Basserman impresses as the diplomat who is a victim of modern torture (if Jazz is not Extreme Metal). A wonderful rollercoaster ride and without a doubt one of Hitchcock's most entertaining films.

The ravages of time have not been kind to this propaganda film. With the exception of the beautiful Rebecca (1940), I generally find the early Hitchcock's (< 1945) a lot less than his later thrillers. .

Although the story and acting can go through with it, the settings are remarkably poor even if you take into account the time in which the film was made.
