The Two Faces of January plot

"A mysterious encounter. A dangerous past. A deadly secret."

1962. The stylish American couple Chester and Colette MacFarland (Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst) are in Athens where they encounter the young Greek-speaking American Rydal (Oscar Isaac) during a trip to the Acropolis. He works as a guide and at the same time tries to scam tourists. When the couple invite him to dinner at their exclusive hotel, he is brought in to help move the body of a seemingly unconscious man. Rydal unwittingly becomes entangled in the duo's grim web and tries to get out of it. But that is complicated by the love he feels for Colette.

This Thriller film (indeed resembles a Hitchcock-like thriller) may not be high-quality or original, but it was quite atmospheric and the cast also did a good job.

The story (revolving around scamming, cheating and murder) that takes place in the 60s in Greece is quite well put together and even knows how to captivate and in the end it even gets exciting. What makes this film especially good is the atmosphere, the visual aspect (images of Greece, sets and decoration) and the cast in the form of Viggo Mortensen, Kirsten Dunst (I always like to see them in films) and Oscar Isaac. Viggo Mortensen in particular plays his part well and convincingly. It takes a while for this movie to really get going, but after the tragic death of Colette (played by Kirsten Dunst) it is best enjoyed until the exciting end of the story which was quite good.

All in all, just a fun and entertaining Thriller, which looks good and doesn't last long.

A film that starts off excellently and that leads a screenplay that would have made for a film noir perfectly at the time and, moreover, is developed in such a way that you will undoubtedly think of Hitchcock.

Unfortunately, this level is not maintained and it becomes somewhat less likely and credible.

A film thus that does not fulfill its promise from the beginning, although there is tension and action in abundance.

The acting can be seen.

Mmm.

Pretty promising in itself, and the movie starts off pretty well too. The setting is perfect for this kind of thriller and in terms of decoration, this film is really okay. With Oscar Isaac, Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst in the lead roles, it seems in principle not too much could go wrong.

Just... Mortensen has a crucial role, but surprisingly can't make anything out of it. He is usually annoying. It should have been more exciting and unpredictable, especially in the interplay with Isaac.

But also some erotic tension between Isaac and Dunst is missing and that should have been felt here in my opinion. The film leans rather on the triangle, but then those tensions under the skin must be clearly present, especially against the background of the Greek sun.

Missed opportunity.
