You can expect directional closures at locations where we reconstruct Franklin Avenue. Crews will first begin work on the north side of Franklin Avenue, then move to the south side of the road later in the fall.
Franklin Avenue reconstruction
County Road 5 in South Minneapolis
Hennepin County, in coordination with the City of Minneapolis, is making it safer and easier to travel on Franklin Avenue (County Road 5). From fall 2025 through 2027, we will reconstruct the road between Lyndale (County Road 22) and Chicago avenues.
This segment of Franklin Avenue, between Lyndale and Chicago avenues, is currently an urban roadway with two lanes of traffic in each direction, off-peak parking in various locations, and no designated bikeways. When this project is complete, Franklin Avenue will have:
- New biking, walking, and mixed-use paths for people who walk, bike, and roll
- Safer crossings for people who walk, bike, and roll
- Improved traffic flow for transit riders and drivers
- Improved lighting and green spaces
- Better access to businesses, residents, and other locations on Franklin Avenue
Previous engagement
From 2019 to 2020, and from spring 2022 to fall 2024, we asked the community near Franklin Avenue about how we could improve the road and make it safer for everyone, including those that walk, bike, roll, take transit, and drive. We used that feedback, along with technical data and city and county policies, to create a final plan for Franklin Avenue.
