SWDP hands Seward is 1st 9-man loss

The Student Wrestling Development Program defeated Seward 20-8 on Saturday in Denali Conference action in Fairbanks.

The Seahawks are the two-time defending nine-man state champs and were 18-0 in nine-man football heading into the game. SWDP is in its first year of nine-man football.

Seward is 0-1 in the league and 3-1 overall, while SWDP is 1-0 and 3-0.

“We played hard against a good team, just made a few too many mistakes and didn’t execute well enough,” Seward head coach Tyler Mallory wrote in a text message. “We will come back from it better.”

On the last play of the first half, Seward took an 8-0 lead on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Emerson Cross to Lane Petersen. SWDP then scored three touchdown in the second half.

The Seahawks have a bye and are at Valdez on Saturday, Sept. 20, at noon. Also in nine-man action, Nikiski will be at Monroe Catholic on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 1 p.m.
