Well, I usually don't read manga, because I think or at least I thought they weren't to be compared with anime. But, Kaneda Yousuke made me think otherwise.

I just watched the anime, so the story seemed interesting, though I was surprised to see only the first ~18 chapters were adapted in a one cour anime. So I decided to give the manga a try, since the manga seemed to have so many things left to tell.

So here it started, marathoning the chapters, I just fell in love with the characters, the carefulness with which they were drawn and the high level of details, top tier ...

If anyone asks for Manga recommendations, this one will definitely be up in my list. It had me laughing in tears from all the funny characters, sitting on the edge of my seat from all the intense moments, and most importantly, had me smiling at the beautiful love story of Romio and Juliet. I have only recently started reading manga (the list in my profile is incomplete though). However, after finishing Kishuku Gakkou no Juliet, I suddenly found myself craving for more. I'd like to believe that Shakepspeare himself would be proud of this.

The initial premise is fine, and it starts off alright. There was some potential there. But it quickly grows stale.

Not even 10 chapters in and the male protagonist is already being blackmailed and humiliated publicly in the most cliche plot development conceivable. Then, in another cliche, he easily forgives the perpetrator for the silliest reason possible. Actually, the male protagonist often gets treated with a total lack of respect from practically every character in the series, and he does little about it. He's just a total pushover.

A beautiful manga At the time I started his anime not expecting much but in his first chapters he began to hook me up little by little that I could not wait 1 week for Anime and I went to manga .. From there began my adventure for this manga. Kishuku Gakkou no Juliet is a school manga that shows us protagonists of some classic characters Romeo and Juliet you could say that it is a plot already widely used and recycled but by following the story you see that it is not. The author shows us what the best of manga ... is for me and it is the variety of characters so charismatic the secondary are very good since in the course of the manga these are related to any of the 2 protas and show us their development with them What I think is great. Another strong point is how the author makes it clear that it is a love story of 1 single couple not of a love triangle, so you expect a solid love story between Romeo and Juliet without any third party getting in the way. This story follows the classic of a forbidden love where they, being recognized characters in their school, try to hide their love as well as possible, but they know that they cannot last like this forever, so their main objective is to "Change the World". The whole manga is focused on this in how the protas want the world to change and accept their relationship. In the course of the manga everything becomes more difficult and new characters that influence the story and especially in the evolution of the protagonists come out this seems to me a very good point to make the secondary are not episodes and are characters that have importance with them. Kishuku Gakkou no Juliet is a school manga so it has many episodes "Slice of Life" where we see the day-to-day life of the protas hiding their relationship or relating to other characters at school but this point is not heavy the author knows how to plan these situations so that it does not look like "Stuffing or something unnecessary" this makes following the Manga very comfortable and does not feel heavy to follow; other than that it puts "shonen" arches or action scenes that look great from my point of view. In my personal opinion I love this manga is one of the first that I followed and I feel very nostalgic that it ends, for my part very happy with everything and it is a wonderful manga and that above all you take a very big affection to all his characters, as soon as Drawing is very good not becoming a work of art but having a more than decent level, the story is great moves slowly but flows through its characters so it is consumed very well. Anyway this was my review, from here I am with tears in my eyes seeing how one of my favorite works has come to an end ... Until forever Kishuku Gakkou no Juliet has been a wonderful manga.

This really, really is an awesome manga. This manga has a comedy and romance quality that is really strong and thick. Each page can fascinate the reader with the pleasure of reading this manga. Comedy that makes readers laugh out loud. Romance that makes readers want to feel the taste of youth love. Boarding School Juliet is a typical shounen romcom that's cliched, predictable, but still a fun read overall. And that's why its a masterpiece imo.

Art - The art is fantastic. It’s visually pleasing to the eye, has a great amount of detail put into it (backgrounds, expressions, etc) and I absolutely love the character designs. Even when the series transitioned from a monthly to a weekly, the art still holds up impressively. The art also captures the tone of certain scenes beautifully ranging from comedic moments, dramatic moments, and action sequences, making you “feel” the vibe each scene plays out. It also has a good amount ... of fantastic spreads and chapter covers that make feel excited every time I turn the page.

Story - The story is inspired from the classic tale, Romeo and Juliet, where Romio and Juliet are secret lovers whose goal is to unite and seek peace within their rival cities. I love how the series manages its tones: comedy for laughs, drama for seriousness, action for awesome, and fluffy romance for wholesome goodness. I also love how the story is constantly engaging, as it slowly builds its setting and character relationships, and each arc is constantly moving the plot forward. The payoff each arc has is really satisfying.

Characters - The BSJ cast is the strongest aspect of the series, and that is due to the various dynamics. The characters have their unique quirks, personalities, and each of them get a chance to shine in the story, even if it is a small part. The character relationships is what shined because I love how they slowly start to grow and influence each other, and I honestly didn't feel there was one character I genuinely did not like. The cast is wonderful, from main, to supporting, and antagonists alike, the author did a good job at putting a lot of care into writing well written characters and giving them a place in the story.

Enjoyment - I really enjoyed reading BSJ. After giving the series a reread, it definitely deserved to have a spot in my top favorite mangas overall. Its the kind of romcom series that speaks to me and I enjoyed investing my time in it, whether its the art, the story, or the characters! And that is what this manga succeeds at, being really fun!

Conclusion - So why do I think Boarding School Juliet is a masterpiece? Well, its able to take a generic, predictable, and formulaic romcom and make it really fun and engaging. When it comes to most shounen romcoms, a lot of the criticisms are towards how cliched they can be (love triangles, how long till they get together, overused character tropes, etc). BSJ is no exception in having its fair share of cliched moments, but what makes it stand out to me is how they are written. A lot of BSJ's great moments are engaging and fun to read through, and while some may think its good and nothing special, to me, its amazing in every category.

If you haven't given Boarding School Juliet a read, I highly recommend it to any romcom reader out there. Its fun, interesting, and awesome to read through. The series also lasted roughly 119 chapters, so if you don't want to read a romcom that's 200+ chapters long, then this series is for you!

Kishuku Gakkou no Juliet (2015-2019)

A School setting for effectively Romeo and Juliet. HOWEVER, in this version of events things are played out in a modern world with old ideals (Random Sword fights to settle things). The story doesn't involve the sacrifice of death but shows a more social-political version of trying to change the status quo for a better future of understanding.

During the most part the Romio (Adapted name) from the East in black uniform and Juliet from the West in White uniform go to the academy on an island that separates the two areas which is a false yet unyielding symbol of unity ... after much conflict. Students attend from a very young age all the way to finishing college and are expected from their childhoods to dislike the each other in a black vs white (Not skin colour but uniform) conflict.

Romio and Juliet have grown up together but separately at the same time. They however harbor feelings for each other which in the Manga like the Anime is quickly realised. The relationship must be kept secret going forwards to avoid getting pushed out the school. Although in theory there is nothing wrong with the situation as you will learn past transgression of previous students has had disastrous results in this type of situation.

As the series goes on they learn about each other deeply and all the people around them. Some people find out the secret and are convinced for the best to keep it secret. It comes to a head eventually where a decisive choice must be made by the students in an attempt to change the world. This comes to a decision that involves them going forward with their decision. After many altercations things improve in some ways.

Eventually, we get to a really nice ending that shows the opposite side of the Shakespearean story that is much more satisfying. We even get a time skip to help close things off.

The art used within the series is a really great level of detail with some Ecchi scenes that give a bit of a change up and truth that the real world isn't truly clean. Some people want a pure story like nothing dirty exists in the real world.

Characters are many and they are mostly (the important ones) developed with great detail and care. We learn about so many people on such a deep level that you feel you could be their friend since you know so much about them.

Aside from Romio and Juliet they are surrounded by a close knit bunch that through adversary and sometimes against their own desires do work forward sensibly to change the world. Many truths about people comes out to which some are good and some are bad. They however, in the attempt to change the world work through forgiveness and rectify the state of things as they go forward.

The series in all is extremely enjoyable and aside from a slightly rushed ending is 100% worth a read. There were moments I felt a tightness in my chest as I read what was happening. Towards the middle set and beyond times I was getting teary eyed which caused me to react. The scenes in places that filled you with a genuine joy that makes you think being in their world during this time would have been an absolute pleasure to have joined their plight.

Overall, this is an awesome series that puts you through a deep set of emotions and brings you close to the characters on many levels. It has left a long last impression on me as a reader.

I would love to see the series get a full adaptation of anime and if I could fund it I absolutely would.

If you want something similar try reading Ore ga Ojousama Gakkou ni "Shomin Sample" Toshite Rachirareta Ken. This is a really nice story about the naive world the wealthy live in being opened up to the real world in a love story that is hilarious due to its nature and also heart pounding when it needs to be that concludes in a really satisfying way.

Interesting work, this revisitation of Romeo and Juliet. Because even if the characters are called like Romeo (Romio) and Juliet, they are nowhere like their dramatic counterparts. And rightly so.

Just as many have said - yes a lot of the things are quite cliche. So what? There is a reason why famous works such as Romeo and Juliet are still so frequently studied even at this point. Things could be overdone but we have to rememberthat there is a reason why they are overdone. That is not to say that this manga is cliche because it adds its own sweet touch to the cliche trope.

The beginning was a bit abrupt if I say so myself. I honestly didn't know why Inazuka liked Perucia until the very end of the manga, when it ... was finally revealed that Inazuka started falling Perucia's unbreakable resolve to keep fighting back and grow stronger, as contrary some spoiled noble brat. It is quite heartwarming when you think about it - Perucia was close to giving up, and Inazuka caused her to grow from a cry baby to the very person Inazuka fell in love with. Hasuki is honestly in quite a similar situation to Perucia, as she was also woken up but Inazuka and but instead she fights alongside with her. I really would say that both of them deserved Inazuka, but of course the story required Perucia and Inazuka to be a couple, and it turned out amazing.
Now I have only read it once (in the past few days) so my comprehension might still be lacking a bit, but I failed to really grasp Perucia's interest in Inazuka at the very start. Don't get me wrong, it was likely intended for their relationship and intimacy to build up along the way, contrary to the actual Romeo and Juliet story where they fall for each other crazily right off the bat. I like how the story developed their love, but the confession and Perucia's decision to go out with him seemed a bit... strange? Did she really like him in the first place? I am sure she doesn't hate him, since not once did she mention or show that she hated him, even before their relationship. In fact, she called him a rival. Rivalry is far from hatred as we know, and this often exists between close ones as well. Fair enough - they were close as rivals. But I didn't feel Perucia's interest in Inazuka honestly, and she likely realised from the start that this relationship is more likely going to be a drag in reaching her objective to change the world and inherit her household (I am going to re-read soon to understand the story more so I am going to post a second reflection at some point). However, of course, their love turned out not only being the symbol that broke down the walls between the black dogs and white cats, but ultimately a symbol for the harmony that could exist between the west and touwans. (Ok I have no idea but I am starting to tear up while writing that sentence, it's so beautiful, the ending was incredible).
Overall, characterization was amazing, especially for Inazuka and a few others, but honestly even near the end, I still couldn't connect with Perucia as much, but I still love those two with all my heart.

Now let's move on story development. The beginning would have been probably a 7-8ish (the part that was animated). It was sweet but, the lack of interest on Perucia's part before the confession made the sweet moments (such as the balcony scene where she says "I love you") that followed a bit...less captivating I would say. The story development is where this story improves to a good 9. The characterization is madely what made this manga so enjoyable. I didn't really hate anyone, which is rare for a manga. Usually I despise a few people from each anime or manga series, like Frederica from eighty six (I don't really "hate" her but I can't stand kids that run their mouths). Even as I was starting to hate Leon for her evil deeds, she turned out to be a wonderful person with a reason for her evil doings. Characterization for Leon was amazing as well - her backstory is both sad and heart-warming. Perucia's meetings with Inazuka were always interrupted and cut-short, but it always ended up even sweeter. Perucia going to Touwan is where I first start to really connect with Perucia and feel her love for Inazuka. Especially that chapter where Perucia was leaving for the West and decided to take a detour. I knew Perucia wanted to explore Touwan more and spend a bit more time with Inazuka before leaving, but that ending of that chapter where she jumped and hugged him as the train was ready to depart - that was one of the most heart-warming moment in this manga imo where she said "I wasn't satisfied" with paint of red blush on her small little cheeks. This happens quite often in anime or manga series, but I just seem to never have enough of these moments <3. How Perucia was revealed to Airu and the Inazuka's family was amazing, Airu's realization of his wrong obsession over the Inazuka family name was amazing. Overall, prior to the first climax of the prefect election, their trip to Touwan was very memorable to me.

Alright let's move on the first climax, which I also would like to give a 9/10. "Sorry Juliet", "No need to apologise Romio" - man. Chiwa san's words, their lack of regret - it taught me a great lesson. It is not the first time I have heard things such as "never regret the fun times, no matter how it turned out". This is true for many life lessons in general - you hear it countless of times across countless platforms and from a variety of different people. It matters most how the lesson resonate with one. I throw most life lessons out right away most of the time, or I don't care for it after hearing it. This lesson stuck with me and I don't know why. This might be temporary but, my exams are approaching, I am in my final year of high school - in fact, tmr I literally my last day of high school. I have been sad, who wouldn't be. But honestly, I am glad I ended high school with this - for the good, fun, and embarrassing times - I have no regrets. I am glad I met the amazing people over the past few years and I have undergone plenty of hardships. In that end, I have no regrets.

The true jewel and that 10/10 is reserved for the last two volumes. Another trip - ah yes I do love me some trips. Their wedding was beautiful. They effectively showed how everyone's life turned out, all the important support characters as well. I love them so much for doing this. I can't stress how many times a good manga ended up by only focusing on the main characters without telling us how some of our other favourite people are doing. Aby and Somali's children- wholesome. Scott being Char's dog was also a really nice chuckle. Cybearrrr and that annoying ass cait was really wholesome too. And of course as mentioned, Leon and Hasuki turned out amazing too. I just haven't had enough of this. Oh man. I just can't. If I could see how all of them turned out after Perucia and Inazuka got married, that would even be better. Just like Karakai-Jouzu no takagi san moto, so wholesome ~~~!

Anyways, I don't even know what am I writing. This is not very cohesive because I am just putting my thoughts down as I reflect on this story. I am definitely gonna re-read this manga.

I find a lot of enjoyment in this rom-com manga. When I stumbled this manga on social media I was pretty interested in the story and the name "Kishuku Gakkou no Juliet" or "Boarding School Juliet" because I have experience with boarding school.

tl;dr: A manga about the development of bonds between a couple and those around them and how they change the world.

This manga takes a lot of cues from Romeo and Juliet. It’s about a prestigious school where students from two countries that are on terrible terms attend which results in the two groups of students seeing each other as enemies, but the hero, Romio Inizuka, and the heroine, Juliet Persia, fall in love anyway. Thus, as expected, a lot of people seem to compare them to the point of considering this a modern adaptation. However, this is fundamentally incorrect because they’re incredibly different works. The ... obvious difference from the beginning is that this isn’t a tragedy, it’s a rom-com with a decent amount of drama, so everything about it from the way it flows to the story itself are completely different and take nothing from the original. The other difference, of which there are hints of from the but that doesn’t really become clear until a good way through the manga, is that in the original the story was merely about two lovers that wanted to be together but couldn’t, this is the story about two lovers that wanted to be together and changed the world to accept their love. While romance is still a core aspect of the story, ultimately there’s a lot more to it than just that, and thus it is a very different kind of story.

Stories about change are generally pretty good with character and relationship development and this is no exception. The main couple both have good character and relationship development as they both strive to improve themselves for the purposes of their relationship and goals. The romantic development between the two for most of the story is just decent and is mainly carried by a few especially strong moments. However, these few moments are strong enough to hold their overall relationship arc very well, and thus it’s easy to get invested in them and their fate.

But just as importantly, or maybe even more importantly, is the bonds that they develop with the rest of the cast. There is a large cast of side characters with all sorts of different personalities and connections to the main couple. A lot of them are fleshed out quite well with their own backgrounds, motivations, and even character arcs, with many of them being incredibly likable and easy to get invested in. Over the course of the manga, the main couple develop close bonds with them through a variety of stories, and ultimately these bonds pay off in what feels like a really well built up to climax that was incredibly satisfying. I thought the manga would end there, but it keeps going quite a bit after that and more directly tackles the themes of hate between people and how to overcome that. It’s an incredibly simplistic and optimistic view, but I found it heartwarming nevertheless. And all that builds up to a finale that’s similarly too easy and happy, but still incredibly satisfying and perfect way to end things.

The main weakness of the manga I would have to say is its comedy. As this is a rom-com, the comedy is a core aspect, but in general the comedy in this isn’t all that great, just decent. It’s fine when the comedy is intermixed with storylines that have more substance as it works well to help with the pacing. But there are also portions that are focused solely on comedy that don’t contribute really at all to anything in the grand scheme of things which just felt like they were dragging on.

The art design is overall pretty great. The two factions have very clear visual codings which makes things easier to follow, and though it also limited what could be done with said characters, overall I still think the manga has really good character designs. The style also works pretty well for the story it’s telling, being somewhat shoujo-esque but with shounen like framing most of the time. The art quality too is overall solid.

After rewatching the anime series a 2nd time, I decided to come here on MAL to find the source material and see what comes after episode 12. It didn't disappoint.

Story: 8/10
I enjoyed the plot a lot. It was funny, while incorporating drama and suspense. The innocent romance was a plus and it was really fun to watch Inuzuka and Persia struggle along. The only problem I had with the story was the last 20 chapters of the West Arc. In my opinion, it was a little rushed because they basically skipped a whole year.

Before I begin, this is a SPOILER FREE review, so do not worry about any spoilers for the story.

For this review, I will go by each category giving my brief thoughts on each.

1: Story - 10/10

The story of this manga is quite simply amazing. It sounds simple enough, and it is, but the story allows for this manga to truly show its genre: romantic comedy. There is plenty of great romance and plenty of great comedy. Honestly, it has such a great blend of each that it does not matter which you prefer (romance or comedy) because either way you will be wholeheartedly satisfied ... with the story. Of course, there is a good amount of drama in here to keep the story moving forward, and the drama that is in here is fantastic in my opinion. The story flows so well and nothing ever seems out of left field. That is to say there are no glaring plot holes or deus ex machinas.

2: Art - 10/10

All I can really say for this is the art style is incredible. Multiple times I just had to pause and admire how good the images and characters looked. Truly great art that helps showcase how much care went into this series.

3: Character - 10/10

If the story is so amazing, obviously that has to mean the characters are pretty amazing too. Because this manga is not that long (which is ok as it does not need to be), most character backstories are rather short and sweet. However, there are some characters with more in-depth backstories (aside from Romio and Juliet) and even these backstories are done justice. The characters are all quite memorable, at least to me, and are all certainly lovable for one reason or another. With so many different characters with different personalities, each shown great care by the author, it would be nearly impossible to read this manga and not like any of them.

4: Enjoyment - 10/10

As you can tell by now with my thoughts from the other categories, I really enjoyed this manga. At first, the chapters were long and it was sort of slow because I had already seen the anime, which is a very faithful adaptation . However, once I got past the parts I had already seen, it was honestly hard to put this down. Took me basically a week to read everything, only because I was busy some days. This is a manga I would spend a whole day reading if I had nothing to do. Of course, by the end I was sad because my time with the characters and the world was over. That being said, if a series is able to make you miss it when you are done, that means the series did its job well in the fact that it engrossed you in its characters and its world. Also, I enjoyed this manga so much that I actually would read the afterwords at the end of volumes and the bonus stuff at the end of volumes, which is something I rarely do as I am never this engrossed in the manga. However, with this manga I could not help but read everything there was, as I was actually interested in Yosuke Kaneda's thoughts and opinions because I loved his story so much.

5: Overall - 10/10

This manga is a masterpiece in my eyes. If you like romance or comedy (or especially both), then I would be surprised if you do not think the same. You can tell how much love Yosuke Kaneda has for this manga, which is not surprising considering he wrote it to express some of his favorite ideas. When an author puts so much love into a story, it is not surprising when those reading or watching the story also fall in love with it. Heck, this is my first review on the website despite being on here for years and having read plenty of good manga and watched plenty of good anime. It is my first review though because of how much I loved the story. I finished the manga at like 7:30 a.m. as I stayed up late reading it, and I knew I had to write a review on it when I woke up.

The story is nothing we haven't seen before: a forbidden romance, in which the two leaders of rivaling clans/dorms fall in love and must be careful to keep their relationship a secret. Cue misunderstandings, hijinks, and characters going to comedic lengths to hide their budding romance. There's nothing wrong with the story, but this is definitely not the manga's strong point.
