There is only one person that high school student Saito Houjou truly cannot stand—and that is his temperamental classmate, Akane Sakuramori. The two have always been on bad terms; their contrasting views and personalities only lead to endless fighting. However, everything changes when Saito's grandfather and Akane's grandmother arrange a sudden meeting and insist that the two get married!

Walking down the aisle is the last thing Saito and Akane want, but they are quickly coerced into accepting the ridiculous plan and soon move into a shared house as husband and wife. Although Saito and Akane despise each other, navigating life together under the same roof may just turn their bitter hatred into everlasting love.

'I'm Getting Married to a Girl I Hate in My Class' is a fun anime. The concept is not new. It seems like this is this decade's take on the pattern set by Ranma ½.

We have our main leads Houjou Saito and Sakuramori Akane. Both hate each other. Saito is lazy but gets top grades due to his photographic memory. In contrast, Akane has to work hard only for her to land in second place, a scenario that reminds you of Special A.

Little did they know that their grandpa and grandma respectively were former lovers. They still love each other and would like to live ... vicariously by marrying off their grandchildren. So Saito and Akane got married on paper, and they need to keep their school from finding out.

At first, Akane is the most annoying character. If you've only seen Episode 1 and you're tempted to drop, don't. By Episode 3, Akane starts becoming so cute and lovable. The way she speaks a bit fast as she is embarrassed is worth watching. Her seiyuu, Yano Hinaki, has other characters this season, but she doesn't speak the way Akane does in her other characters.

Note that some of the people who find Akane annoying miss the point of why I find her actions cute. I would like to use the concept of indicator of interest versus indicator of interest as well as text versus subtext. Stating that she hates him is 1) an indicator of disinterest and 2) at a textual level. But if you observe her nervousness and her tone of voice, she is actually indicating that she is interested in Kaito. Thus, even if her overt behaviour is an IOD, she is actually expressing an IOI. There's a disconnect between text and subtext that perceptive viewers find obvious and I find it strange that some people miss this.

Nevertheless, Akane is not the best girl in the anime. Whilst she is the end game, the other female characters are more interesting, so watching them might interest you more.

Light novel readers say that the anime crams 5 volumes' worth of content and skips some. But for anime-only viewers like me, it doesn't feel like something is missing.

Animation is average. The musick is catchy.

I do recommend this anime, but here's where it might not sit well. The final episode doesn't seem to be a finale. It feels more like a necessary plot development in a 24-episode anime. I don't know if we'll get a second season. But the anime has done a good job promoting the source material.

If you're looking for something new in romance, look elsewhere. It's an average story but executed well.

Mixed Feelings

When I first stumbled upon the trailer for this anime - I'm Getting Married to the Girl I Hate in My Class, I was kind of hyped, not gonna lie. The premise looked like the perfect setup for some spicy tsundere romance, forced proximity, maybe even a bit of that "enemies to lovers" magic. And to be fair, I was totally down for that. I thought it might give off the same feelings I had when I first watched Tsuki ga Kirei or Nisekoi—turns out, it tried to be Nisekoi's cousin, but ended up feeling more like a weaker imitation.

The show starts off strong with ... the whole "our grandparents arranged our marriage" twist, and Akane being this feisty, sharp-tongued tsundere with soft layers underneath was honestly the hook for me. She was the reason I stayed. I loved how she tried to balance her pride with her emotions—felt pretty real to me, like she didn’t want to give in but deep down, she was opening up little by little. Those tiny smiles and quiet moments she had were genuinely sweet. She was carrying half the emotional weight of the series on her shoulders, no cap.

But then… Saito.

Man, this dude had me pulling my hair out. You’ve got this guy who’s objectively smart, composed, kinda aloof (in a cool way?), but then comes to romance and emotional intelligence? My guy completely short-circuits. He’s living under the same roof as Akane, she’s cooking for him, they’re brushing shoulders almost every day, sharing vulnerable moments—and yet he acts like it’s all just part of the curriculum. Like bro, are you dense or just scared of commitment?

And don’t even get me started on his dynamic with Himari and Shisei. I get it, they’re classmates and have their own stories, but at some point, it just felt like he was emotionally cheating, even if it wasn’t intentional. There’s this scene (you’ll know which one if you’ve watched it) where Himari leans in a bit too close, and instead of drawing the line, he just... freezes. Like, really? If I was engaged—even if reluctantly—I’d at least respect the boundaries of the person I’m sharing a roof and future with. This dude’s heart is everywhere but where it’s supposed to be.

Honestly, what killed it for me was the glacial pacing. Twelve episodes in, and the needle barely moved. It’s like watching two people on a slow escalator… but the escalator’s broken. You don’t even get a clear sense of progress—no confirmation of who likes who, no resolution, not even a strong emotional climax. Just... cute moments sprinkled here and there, which, I’ll admit, were adorable enough to save this from a 4/10.

And yeah, I’ll confess—I did enjoy those cute bits. Some of the domestic scenes were warm and fuzzy, like watching a half-baked romance play out in slow motion. It gave me a couple of "aww" moments, and I’m a sucker for those.

So… will I be watching Season 2? Eh. Only if the writers decide to give Saito a brain (or a heart), and actually let the story progress. If he stops tiptoeing around his own damn feelings and finally chooses Akane and proves it—not just by words, but actions too—I might just stick around.

Until then, this one sits at a 6/10 for me. Has potential, but right now? It's like a lukewarm cup of tea that you keep sipping, hoping it'll get better.

Make characters great again. This rom-com suffers from two bland main characters who fail to carry the show. The female lead is a pseudo-tsundere, offering a watered-down version of the trope, while the male lead is just plain boring. Watching these two interact is like watching paint dry—there’s no spark or excitement to keep you invested.

The characters lack depth, resembling a shallow pool rather than a vast ocean. In contrast, the side characters steal the show with their more intriguing personalities and better chemistry. The anime truly shines when they’re on screen, outshining the leads by a mile.

The writing sticks to tired, predictable "misunderstanding" plot ... lines that plague generic rom-coms. By the end of the series, nothing meaningful is achieved, leaving you with little more than the hollow satisfaction of finishing a mind-numbingly mid anime. The title promises hate between the main characters, but where is it? If the writing leaned into that premise with some real stakes, this could have been a unique standout.

Another missed opportunity lies with the male lead, who’s repeatedly described as intelligent yet never gets a chance to show it. Why bother mentioning his intellect so often if the series isn’t going to explore it? It’s a frustrating tease that goes nowhere.

Overall, this anime isn’t worth your time. If you’re craving a rom-com with depth and heart—something this show could have been—skip this and watch Toradora! instead.
