Akebi-chan no Sailor-fuku

Ever since she was young, Komichi Akebi has always adored sailor uniforms, even going so far as to ask her mother to sew one if she succeeds in getting into her mother's alma mater, Roubai Academy. And thus, when she gets accepted into the prestigious school, Komichi is ecstatic. However, much to her surprise, the middle school no longer uses sailor uniforms as its dress code—making Komichi stand out from her schoolmates. Despite this, Komichi is granted permission to continue wearing the traditional attire.

With renewed confidence, Komichi meets fascinating classmates as they experience school life together. Under the colorful shower of blossoming prospects, an exciting tomorrow awaits them!

Upon watching Akebi's Sailor Uniform for the first time, the thing that immediately stood out to me, outside of the phenomenal animation, is its odd fascination with feet and its focus on the allure of these schoolgirls' bodies. That focus is the strangest part of the anime for me, and it took me some time to know how to feel about it. The characters are undoubtedly sexualized, and their bodies idealized, but it feels very considered and deliberate. It feels more that the show is finding immense beauty in these girls' bodies instead of having these oggling shots just for a male audience to lust ... over. It's strange to say, but this unabashed admiration for every part of the girls' bodies exudes a sincerity unmatched in any other anime which does this kind of thing. Even though it's obvious fetish bait, things like Akebi fidgeting with her feet when nervous is such a realistic and subtle thing people do, and seeing that attention to detail really enhances the feelings the show is trying to evoke.

Regardless of how this anime frames its cast, the animation is some of the most consistently full of life and detailed I have seen in a TV anime! Immense attention is paid to the tiny details of every single thing and that attention to detail gives so much depth to the animation. Small simple things like actively seeing a character walk from one place to another instead of a cut that implies it. Or little details such as Akebi getting a piece of her hair stuck in her mouth after running and landing a big jump. The way a character walks, positions their hands, moves their feet, and all the subtle ways they do that differently from everyone else, exudes so much of their specific character, emotions, and charm. The direction was very effective too! Constantly, things are shown from unique angles, which makes the viewing experience more varied and interesting. It's nowhere near something like Hidamari Sketch's often artsy and strange direction, but they're trying to do different things. This anime has lots of very subtle but still very impactful artistic direction, which I think has a massive impact on the feeling this anime produces. I also give massive props to the animators for animating every instrument playing the proper notes. That is not an easy task.

Complimenting the incredible animation is the characters and story! The show follows Akebi, our infectiously positive and optimistic lead, and how her interactions with her new classmates improves their lives and makes them more confident in expressing their own unique beauty and charm to the world. Akebi herself is an intensely lovable character, and she has a subtle layer of depth to her, as do her classmates. There is a general focus on girls' issues while growing up while still feeling very laid back and chill. It's a great mix of attributes and every episode felt fulfilling and fun to watch! It's also very homoerotic, but that's a given with slice of life shows xD. My biggest gripe with this anime is that I wish we had a more central cast. Every one of Akebi's classmates gets about equal screen time with a few exceptions, which I like and do think fits thematically, but I found it somewhat difficult to get particularly attached to a character outside their initial episode.

In conclusion, if you can get past or embrace the sexualization of the girls in this show, you'll have a great time! I'd argue that the animation alone gave me enough value to really appreciate it, adding on top well-written and likable characters, and I'd say this is a very good anime!

Mixed Feelings

This anime kind of sucks. I'm sorry. The thing with a slice of life story is that it really depends on whether or not you like the characters. The characters in this one are incredibly boring. Everyone is polite. There is no drama not even silly comedic drama. No character really feels unique in any way. They feel as if you could take them out of this anime and just place them in any other high school anime and it wouldn't even be noticible.

The anime starts off decent enough. I liked the first 2 or 3 episodes. I thought the premise was silly though. Akebi ... wears the wrong uniform and they let her keep it. I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure Japan is really strict when it comes to dress code so there really is no way that would happen in real life. The anime kind of falls into an episodic formula. Most of the stories told here are just... meh. The only one I really cared for was the one about the bookmark. That one actually had me invested. Other than that, it's just kind of mid. Boring. I had to force myself to finish it.

When people say stuff like, "the author is just using this to showcase their own fetishes" or something like that, I normally write it off. Whenever people dig a little too deep and say "well actually, this is just an allegory for this" I write it off unless I think it has basis in reality. This anime has a reputation of being a foot fetishist's wet dream. That the author and people involved in the production of this anime have some sort of foot fetish. I'm inclined to agree with this statement. When a random foot just appeared in the opening, I was caught off guard but I didn't read too much into it. Then it happened again. And again. And again. It was at that point that I really started to think some pervy shit was going on. I looked online and there were plenty of people that agreed with me. This doesn't even have anything to do with the review, I just felt I should point it out. This shit is weird.

Akebi is boring as a character. "Mary Sue" is a term that is a bit overused but I think this describes Akebi perfectly. She has no flaws really. Every one likes her. Her "struggles" are fake. She is annoying as shit. I despise her. This anime is a slog. Are there any positives? Of course. Animation is gorgeous. The art style looks a little bizarre at times but it's solid. Soundtrack is also really good. The main theme is quite beautiful. Overall, it sucked ass for me. I rarely put "not recommended" because who am I to say. I think that should be reserved for truly bad pieces of media. This isn't the worst thing I've ever seen and I know for a fact that many people enjoyed it. I'm just not one of those people.

so, i have a VERY strong opinion about something shown multiple times in this anime,

i felt like there was a little bit of sexualization going on, now that im thinking about it, there definitely was.

for example, when her and her LITTLE SISTER, were in the bath, we didn’t see anything, but i felt it was just it there not just to show us them having a good conversation with each other but also to…excite the people watching…

which, sexualizing MINORS IS NOT OKAY, anime or not it’s just fucking weird. as a lady, the sexualization completely ruined the show for me.

i mean, it was in ... every episode almost.

i would check the comments on the episodes and all i would read was creepy men commenting about how akebis little sister was so “fucking adorable”, get off the internet please, that’s a child. you’re weird.

like in the shot in episode 8 minute 12:02, there was a girls ass in the screen, mind you she’s a minor as well and grown men are watching this show.

(from what i’ve read on the comments, most of the men are openly admitting they are in their 20s-30s.)

other than the sexualization along with what could be considered some fetishizes, the show was fine.

the animation was very pretty,

though, the previous thing i listed caused my rating to drop to a 5.
