Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu Part 2

After the mysterious mana calamity, Rudeus Greyrat and his fierce student Eris Boreas Greyrat are teleported to the Demon Continent. There, they team up with their newfound companion Ruijerd Supardia—the former leader of the Superd's Warrior group—to form "Dead End," a successful adventurer party. Making a name for themselves, the trio journeys across the continent to make their way back home to Fittoa.

Following the advice he received from the faceless god Hitogami, Rudeus saves Kishirika Kishirisu, the Great Emperor of the Demon World, who rewards him by granting him a strange power. Now, as Rudeus masters the powerful ability that offers a number of new opportunities, it might prove to be more than what he bargained for when unexpected dangers threaten to hinder their travels.

The best of the series so far. Controversial because of the MC however the story is about redemption, personal growth, regret, overcoming trauma, consequences of actions, identity, and purpose. Simply putting it down because the MC reflects the point of the show is stupid. Anything involving reincarnation has always been touchy due to the nature of it. Its a story of life and growth; is rudeus supposed to get with a 35 year-old when hes very clearly a child? no that is idiotic and would be even more weird. Is he supposed to have 0 love interests in a story about ... his life and personal growth? no that would make no sense.
Part 2 stand out as a 10 and above the rest as it excels in organic world-building, making its world feel alive through different cultures, languages, and historical conflicts all showcased in the demon continent. The character development in Part 2 shows significant maturity, especially for eris and rudeus. The season ends with a bittersweet turning point, raising questions about the greater lore of the world, and setting up future arcs of growth and struggle. The cherry on top to this part and series as a whole is the atmosphere set by the amazing animation and the careful use of music. The overuse of loud and obnoxious music in anime has always been a problem I've had but the show utilizes music perfectly to set the atmosphere when need be.

Mixed Feelings

To keep this brief, I will not delve too much into the particulars of the actual show, rather just attempt to give an outline of both the problematic and positive aspects of the show. This review will additionally serve as a review for the first season since they are essentially a single split season.

The clear problem with this show is that it sexualizes the underage characters, and if you are uncomfortable with any scenes of such, which probably disqualifies this show for some people (reasonably), then you should steer clear. However it is important to delineate the difference between fictional stories and the problematic behaviors ... that some people in a fanbase may engage with, so if you do not have issue with looking away at the lolicon scenes then I recommend this show tentatively. Despite this, the most problematic of the scenes, the ones which attempt to take seriously the relationships between the young, is still handled in a realistic and serious manner, not hand waved away for the sake of fan service.

The show also leans heavily into the fan service trope, but it is so-so. Sometimes the camera lingers too long on a woman's body despite the character not being drawn in a lewd way, and sometimes it is so brazen that it will just show jiggling breasts for about few seconds. The main character Rudeus is an unashamedly horny boy who uses his child body to his advantage towards these ends. He shows personal growth and begins openly showing care for people in his life in a more genuine manner throughout this season, but he still maintains his perverted behavior despite this. It in part is to show that the people of this world have similar but slightly different views on relationships, but this leads me to one of the strengths of this show which I think I haven't seen another show do better.

The character writing of this show is absolutely amazing. There is a plot contrivance in the first cour of the season which incites the majority of the events in this cour, but beyond this, everyone appears as best as possible a free agent in their own worlds and is not the sole victim of circumstance. Though the story may lean on some tropes of setting or character design, very few people feel like NPCs (the horse demon is an exception to the rule). Some characters are weaker than others in terms of writing, but all of the main cast deals with the situation of the story in a refreshingly realistic and understandable manner, which breaks the expected storyline for something of this nature. This reason alone I believe makes this show worthy of your time. The show isn't trying to fool you with a "I'm a broken mage" cliche or something, or at least it doesn't feel that it's going that way, and you can really tell that each of the characters are still limited by human shortcomings, whether that be physical or mental.

The TL;DR is that this show is a problematic but amazing work of character writing. While it is fine to disregard the show if the problems do not permit enjoyment, it should not be overlooked if it is possible to stomach or look away. Fan service is annoying, but the story outside of the Isekai elements is well paced and ends at a great spot for this season. The other problematic moments may dissuade some, but if you already have gotten used to ignoring them, then this show is an amazing watch.

People talk about the perversion of this show like it actually matters, dude its a fantasy get over it, you wanna know what I care about? The story, the character development, the pacing, the growth, which all are non existent, if the writers spent half as much time invested in actually making Rudy grow and learn as they did with world development and other characters maybe this show would actually be as good as people make it out to be, Mushoku Tensei is super overrated and it is likely because of how ecchi it is and because so many people relate to how much of ... a perverted pessimist Rudy is.
