The first show, the classic one. It adapts the first two sagas of the original manga:
Kids' Dream Ep. 01-56
Boys' Fight Ep. 57-128 (72 episodes)
Why so long? Well, you know, it was the 80's, the manga was ongoing and the studio decided to extend the episodes to not reach the manga (spoiler: it didn't work).
So, really not the best one, or at list not the most recommended one.

As many popular anime, like Dragon Ball and Naruto, Captain Tsubasa got some original movies released in theaters. There were 4 movies in two years, 2 movies per year, wow.
I have nothing to say about them so i'll just list them by release date.

3 Years after the ending of the original show came this OVAs which adapts the third and final saga of the original manga: J Boys' Challenge, also known as the World Youth Arc.

The original manga ended in 1988, and it seemed it was all, but in 1993 Captain Tsubasa returned to the pages of Weekly Shounen Jump in a special five-parts short-story, splitted in 11 chapters in the tankobon release.
This OVA adapts that story, the OVA is terrible, but the manga is terrible also, so no problem.

Remake and sequel?
In 1994 Captain Tsubasa returned again to Weekly Shounen Jum with a new sequel, Captain Tsubasa World Youth.
And in that same year the anime returned with Captain Tsubasa J.
However i didn't just adapts the new manga, it started adapting Kids' dream again instead.
Starting from episode 35 it kinda adapts World Youth, featuring some differences to the manga.
Recommended, but you won't get the full story, you will have to read the manga anyway.

Similar to Captain Tsubasa J, it's a remake and a sequel.
Episodes 1-31 adapts the original manga, heavily abridged of course, and from episode 32 it kinda adapts Captain Tsubasa Road to 2002, featuring A LOT of differences.
However is a good series anyway, recommended, but again you won't get the full story and you will have to read the manga.

After a long silence, Captain Tsubasa returned (probably to promote the Russia World Cup 2018, or to get money of it) with a new version.
This time we are getting a proper adaptation of the original manga, but featuring a modern setting.
It adapts Kids' Dream and Boys' Fight
I recommend this one for newcomers, adapts everything very fairly despite the new setting and has a good pacing.

And when we thought the project had just died a new season came out of no-where in 2023 adapting the last arc.
