Banana Fish is definitely darker, but I would say they're pretty similar in terms of their pacing of drama and mystery, as well as their rivalry with mafia gangs. Both can get pretty dark and emotional, but there's still humour and great soundtrack. Loved the way the characters in both shows are built up over time as well.
Both are mob themed stories, has elements of romance to it, lots of pretty boys and really nice to look at art as well too and quite a bit of action as well.

Both feature dark sides of society, involve mafia, violence, power, injustice. Tear-jerker, shocking moments too. Fast-paced, thrilling, immersive story-telling with enjoyable, in-depth characters. G-r-e-a-t music. I honestly think they go hand-in-hand.
note: I recommended it here because I know bsd is much more popular than bf. But they are both brilliant.
The reason this is similar to Banana Fish is because they both have gang related things and they have someone seeking a bigger goal. Though one is about drugs(Banana Fish) and the other is about finding someplace to be at home.
