So Mari Okada created and directed this. It's not the worst she has done, and it certainly feels like one of her creations. The movie's weakness lies in the symbolism that is omnipresent in the characters and their actions. Okada seems determined to convey some criticism about modern society and human interactions—specifically, the struggle to move forward in a static society and the effort to feel alive in a world devoid of deep meaning.

However, the plot is weak, the logic of the events is unclear, and while the characters sound like something Okada would write, they aren't particularly interesting on their own.

At first, when I went to watch this movie, I thought I was going to see a film about adolescent love. What I watched instead was a story about memories. It reminds me of Remembrance of Things Past by Marcel Proust, in the sense that the real intention of the narration is to paint pictures of the past—of the loved ones that populated that irremediable, meaningful past.

I fully believe that the sad and heartbreaking ending is intentional. The author wants to focus the narration on the memory of Suyi, what she meant to Yi-gyeong, all the things she was, and all that is now lost ...
