Effect of zinc supplementation on certain serum biochemical parameters in growing pigs

Twenty-four healthy and uniform crossbred (Hampshire × Assam Local) pigs, 4 months of age, were s... more Twenty-four healthy and uniform crossbred (Hampshire × Assam Local) pigs, 4 months of age, were selected to study the effect of 500 ppm Zn supplementation on certain serum biochemical parameters for a period of four months. The animals were divided into three groups (n=8/group): group C (basal diet), group T1 (basal diet + 100 ppm Zn + calcium carbonate @ 1.5% DM) and group T2 (basal diet + 500 ppm Zn). Serum samples were collected at 15-day intervals and analysed for serum Zn, copper, total serum protein, albumin, globulin, and glucose cholesterol. The serum Zn concentration in the T1 group decreased significantly (p<0.01) from day 30 until day 120 of treatment, whereas in the T2 group, the level increased significantly (p<0.01) from day 15 onwards. The serum copper concentration did not change groups. The total protein concentration in the serum showed a significant (p<0.01) increasing trend in the T2 group from day 45 of treatment, and a significant (p<0.01) decreasing trend was observed in the T1 group compared to the C group. The serum globulin concentration decreased significantly (p< 0.05) in the T1 group compared with the C and T2 groups during the treatment period. An increasing trend in glucose and cholesterol levels was recorded at T2 during the treatment period. However, decrease, (p<0.01) in glucose and cholesterol levels was recorded in the T1 group from day 30 to day 120 of treatment. The haemoglobin concentration showed a significant (p<0.01) decreasing trend in the T1 group from day 45 onwards.

EFFECT OF STRATEGIC MINERAL MIXTURE ON THE PERFORMANCES OF SOW AND PIGLETS

An experiment was carried out to see the effect of specific minerals on performances of sow as we... more An experiment was carried out to see the effect of specific minerals on performances of sow as well as piglets. A total of 10 pure bred Hampshire sows of first or second farrowing were randomly selected and placed under Experimental Group. Another 10 sows of the same breed and reproductive status served as Control. The animals were kept under intensive system in 30 sow unit, College of Veterinary Science, AAU, Guwahati. Animals were offered concentrate mixture two times a day-morning and evening. Sows under experimental group were supplemented with strategic mineral mixture (AAUVETMIN) while Control animals were supplemented commercial mineral mixture. The mean litter size at birth in experimental and control group were 9.90 ± 0.67 and 8.90 ± 0.90 respectively. Mean litter size at weaning was recorded, respectively as 8.70 ± 0.75 and 7.60 ± 0.54 in experimental and control group. The mean litter weight and average individual body weight of piglets at birth and weaning in experimental group were 14.50 ± 1.01 & 85.62 ± 7.06 and 1.48 ± 0.04 & 9.88 ± 0.12 kg while in control group respective values were 12.77 ± 1.14 & 67.80 ± 5.92 and 1.46 ± 0.04 & 8.87 ± 0.41 kg. The ratio of male to female piglets at birth in experimental and control groups were 1 : 1.09 and 1 : 1.41. The corresponding values for male to female ratio at weaning were 1 : 1.18 and 1 : 1.24. The numbers of female piglets were higher than male in both experimental and control groups. In experimental group survivability rate from birth to weaning was recorded as 87.88% against 85.39% in control group. The supplementation of strategic mineral mixture to the sows during pregnancy could increase the survivability rate by 2.49%.

We explore the potential mechanisms of EMF interaction with animal physiology, and highlighting the areas requiring further investigation.

Pigs depend on panting as primary mechanism of heat dissipation and/or wallowing. Therefore, a study was conducted to generate basic information on certain blood biochemicals of pigs reared in high humid climatic condition. For the purpose, blood samples were collected randomly from 400 female pigs (6–12 month of age) during summer and winter of the year. The analysis of THI has shown an increase in the study area since 2012 to 2018. The hematological study of the pigs revealed a variation in respect of Hb and TEC with the season. Gilts (24; average body weight 20.65±1.72 kg and age 3 months) were randomly assigned into 3 groups (8 animals / group) receiving a basal diet supplemented with (i) 100 mg/kg of Zn (CON-fed); (ii) 100 mg/kg of Zn along with calcium carbonate (1.5% of dry matter of diet, to induce Zn deficiency) (DEF-fed), or (iii) 500 mg/kg of Zn (FOR-fed) for 120 days of experimental period. Estimation of serum estradiol 17β (E3) and progesterone (P4) through “COAT-A-COUNT” method of RIA were considered as the marker for activity of hypothalamic–pituitary– gonadal axis of the pigs. Serum E3 level maintain a basal concentration up to day 75 of experiment in all the groups however, in FOR-fed group the concentration of E3 was highest (P&lt;0.05) on day 105 of experiment (age 225days) compared to CON pigs. The P4 concentration in FOR-fed group was highest on day 105 of experiment. However, the E3 and P4 level was steady in DEF-fed animals up to 120 days of treatment. The higher (P&lt;0.05) values observed in respect of E3 and P4 concentration on day 105 of experiment (at the age of 225) might be due to stimulatory effect of higher dietary Zn level on hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis. The present study suggested that dietary supplementation of Zn at 500 mg/kg level in grower pigs might stimulate Hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis for early attainment of puberty in crossbred pigs.

Haematological profile and productive performance of frizzle fowl reared in subtropical climatic condition of Assam

However, the area is experienced with a high rainfall, temperature and relative humidity. The farm animal species including poultry reared in this district is well adapted to the prevailing subtropical climatic condition. An experiment was designed to survey the productive and reproductive performance as well as normal haematological parameters of frizzle fowl reared in this district. It was observed that the birds were reared in backyard system with little or no supplementation of feed. The productive and reproductive performances were comparable to other indigenous breeds of poultry. Further the present survey also revealed that the average body weight of cockerel and hen were 1.55±0.26 and 1.08±0.51 kg respectively. From the experiment it was observed that the most of the haematological parameters did not differ with other indigenous breed of poultry.

The gastrointestinal (GI) parasitic load and the haematobiochemical profile of local cattle reare... more The gastrointestinal (GI) parasitic load and the haematobiochemical profile of local cattle reared in Joyhing area of north bank plain zone of Assam were studied. GI helminth parasites were detected in the faecal samples collected from 90 animals through standard faecal sample examination techniques. The study revealed 55.72% positive for gastrointestinal parasites which included 38.33% StrongyleSpp, 2.22% Strongyloides Spp., 5.55% Trichuris Spp. However, other gastro intestinal helminths recorded were 4.44% Fasciola and 6.66% Paramphistomum. While comparing between sexes, higher parasitic infestation were recorded in male (62%) than female (38%) animals. However the order of predominance observed in male animals was somewhat inconsistent to that in females. The haematological parameters studied revealed a positive correlation to parasitic load of the infected animals.

Preliminary survey of persons engaged in pork production and processing were made, and reproductive tracts of slaughtered animals were collected from organized (ORG-) and unorganized (UNORG-) slaughter houses in and around Guwahati for assessing their reproductive status through morphometric examination and maturation potential of oocytes. The survey revealed that male pigs, sourced from organized farms, were mostly slaughtered at 8-12 months of age, whereas female pigs were slaughtered after third or fourth farrowing, at ORG-slaughter houses. Pigs slaughtered at UNORG-slaughter houses were mostly sourced from primary producers and household enterprises, and stage of reproductive life was not an important factor influencing the decision to selling. Organometry of female genital organs showed higher values (P<0.05) for pigs slaughtered in ORGslaughter houses. Further, higher numbers (P<0.05) of corpus luteum were found in ORG-ovaries. However, higher number (P<0.05) of surface follicles, in-vitro matureable oocytes and in-vitro matured oocytes were found in UNORG-ovaries. The results of present study suggest that female pigs of unorganized production system are more likely to be sold and slaughtered before realizing their (re)production potential.

To compare the effect of a higher dose of Zn supplementation on serum biochemicals of grower pigs (four months of age) that may serve as general indicators of optimum physiological functions, an experiment was conducted with one treatment group supplemented with higher dose of Zn (500 ppm) and another made deficient by supplementing calcium carbonate (CaCO3) at 1.5% of dry matter of diet, for a period of four months, and was compared to the control supplemented with 100 ppm Zn. Serum Zn decreased significantly in a deficient group (p <0.01), and the animals developed clinical symptoms of parakeratosis. Total serum protein and haemoglobin (Hb) concentration revealed a significantly (p <0.01) increasing trend in Zn-supplemented (500 ppm) animals from day 45 of treatment, whereas a significantly (p <0.01) decreasing trend was observed in deficient pigs. Serum albumin level was not affected by different supplemental level of Zn or induced Zn deficiency. An apparent increasing trend of glucose and cholesterol level was recorded in supplemented groups. However, it decreased significantly (p <0.01) in deficient pigs. The higher serum concentration of Zn, total serum protein, glucose, cholesterol andHb, resulting from 500 ppm of Zn supplementation in grower pigs, might help in maintaining a better physiological status through promotion of well-organised vital functions of proteins, ensuring a sufficient energy source for different physiological processes, and just source for synthesis of steroid hormones and optimal functioning of membrane receptors.

A study was undertaken to know the socio-economic status of women pig farmers, pig rearing system... more A study was undertaken to know the socio-economic status of women pig farmers, pig rearing system, feeding management, annual income from piggery and constraints faced by women farmers and involvement and contribution of women in backyard piggery in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district under North bank plain zone of Assam. A total of 577 women farmers involved actively in pig farming were randomly selected and interviewed with a standard questionnaire. Involvement of married (40.9%) and middle aged women (26-35 years) with formal education adopted piggery through low input traditional management practices for fattening purpose (49.04%). The management system followed was scavenging system (47.05%). Kitchen waste and leftover of local rice beer along with rice bran were the common feeds offered to pigs. Serum Zn level increased in FOR-fed animals, and decreased in DEF-fed compared to CON-fed. Further, DEF-fed animals developed clinical symptoms of parakeratosis. However, the area is experienced with a high rainfall, temperature and relative humidity. The farm animal species including poultry reared in this district is well adapted to the prevailing subtropical climatic condition. An experiment was designed to survey the productive and reproductive performance as well as normal haematological parameters of frizzle fowl reared in this district. It was observed that the birds were reared in backyard system with little or no supplementation of feed. The productive and reproductive performances were comparable to other indigenous breeds of poultry. Further the present survey also revealed that the average body weight of cockerel and hen were 1.55±0.26 and 1.08±0.51 kg respectively. From the experiment it was observed that the most of the haematological parameters did not differ with other indigenous breed of poultry.

GI helminth parasites were detected in the faecal samples collected from 90 animals through standard faecal sample examination techniques. The study revealed 55.72% positive for gastrointestinal parasites which included 38.33% StrongyleSpp, 2.22% Strongyloides Spp., 5.55% Trichuris Spp. However, other gastro intestinal helminths recorded were 4.44% Fasciola and 6.66% Paramphistomum. While comparing between sexes, higher parasitic infestation were recorded in male (62%) than female (38%) animals. However the order of predominance observed in male animals was somewhat inconsistent to that in females. The haematological parameters studied revealed a positive correlation to parasitic load of the infected animals.

Preliminary survey of persons engaged in pork production and processing were made, and reproductive tracts of slaughtered animals were collected from organized (ORG-) and unorganized (UNORG-) slaughter houses in and around Guwahati for assessing their reproductive status through morphometric examination and maturation potential of oocytes. The survey revealed that male pigs, sourced from organized farms, were mostly slaughtered at 8-12 months of age, whereas female pigs were slaughtered after third or fourth farrowing, at ORG-slaughter houses. Pigs slaughtered at UNORG-slaughter houses were mostly sourced from primary producers and household enterprises, and stage of reproductive life was not an important factor influencing the decision to selling. Organometry of female genital organs showed higher values (P<0.05) for pigs slaughtered in ORGslaughter houses. Further, higher numbers (P<0.05) of corpus luteum were found in ORG-ovaries. However, higher number (P<0.05) of surface follicles, in-vitro matureable oocytes and in-vitro matured oocytes were found in UNORG-ovaries. The results of present study suggest that female pigs of unorganized production system are more likely to be sold and slaughtered before realizing their (re)production potential.

To compare the effect of a higher dose of Zn supplementation on serum biochemicals of grower pigs (four months of age) that may serve as general indicators of optimum physiological functions, an experiment was conducted with one treatment group supplemented with higher dose of Zn (500 ppm) and another made deficient by supplementing calcium carbonate (CaCO3) at 1.5% of dry matter of diet, for a period of four months, and was compared to the control supplemented with 100 ppm Zn. Serum Zn decreased significantly in a deficient group (p <0.01), and the animals developed clinical symptoms of parakeratosis. Total serum protein and haemoglobin (Hb) concentration revealed a significantly (p <0.01) increasing trend in Zn-supplemented (500 ppm) animals from day 45 of treatment, whereas a significantly (p <0.01) decreasing trend was observed in deficient pigs. Serum albumin level was not affected by different supplemental level of Zn or induced Zn deficiency. An apparent increasing trend of glucose and cholesterol level was recorded in supplemented groups. However, it decreased significantly (p <0.01) in deficient pigs. The higher serum concentration of Zn, total serum protein, glucose, cholesterol andHb, resulting from 500 ppm of Zn supplementation in grower pigs, might help in maintaining a better physiological status through promotion of well-organised vital functions of proteins, ensuring a sufficient energy source for different physiological processes, and just source for synthesis of steroid hormones and optimal functioning of membrane receptors.

A study was undertaken to know the socio-economic status of women pig farmers, pig rearing system... more A study was undertaken to know the socio-economic status of women pig farmers, pig rearing system, feeding management, annual income from piggery and constraints faced by women farmers and involvement and contribution of women in backyard piggery in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district under North bank plain zone of Assam. A total of 577 women farmers involved actively in pig farming were randomly selected and interviewed with a standard questionnaire. Involvement of married (40.9%) and middle aged women (26-35 years) with formal education adopted piggery through low input traditional management practices for fattening purpose (49.04%). The management system followed was scavenging system (47.05%). Kitchen waste and leftover of local rice beer along with rice bran were the common feeds offered to pigs.
