This task will be performed by reviewing the different activities and their results in this field, from the very beginning. The paper includes the review of the activities of LCA/LCM main research centres in Poznań (Poznań University of Technology (PUT), Poznań University of Economics and Business (PUEB)), Cracow (Polish Academy of Sciences, AGH University of Science and Technology, Cracow University of Economics), Zielona Góra (University of Zielona Góra), Bydgoszcz (UTP University of Science and Technology), Katowice-Gliwice (Silesian University of Technology), Częstochowa (Częstochowa University of Technology) and Szczecin (ZUT Western Pomeranian University of Technology). LCA/LCM researches are also performed in several smaller research groups in R&D centres. For almost three decades, engineered nanoparticles (ENM’s) have been the subject of intensive res... more For almost three decades, engineered nanoparticles (ENM’s) have been the subject of intensive research due to their chemical reactivity and their sorption, catalytic, electronic, optical, magnetic and other unique properties. The results obtained indicate that they provide a new tool for the remediation of contaminated aquatic ecosystems (surface and groundwater), sediments, soil training grounds as well as waste recycling areas, e.g. for electronic. The application of in situ restorative technologies using compositions involving metal nanoparticles, mainly iron nanoparticles (n-ZVI, nano zero-valent iron) is becoming more common. Solutions proposed in a number of publications and patents show the versality, reater efficiency and lower costs of the remediation process, compared with conventional methods.

The dynamic development of nanoscience and nanotechnology has led to revolutionary changes in man... more The dynamic development of nanoscience and nanotechnology has led to revolutionary changes in many areas of science and industry, raising a great deal of hope for its potential to solve a wide range of problems of the modern world. Nanomaterials, also referred to as engineered nanoparticles are a product of nanotechnology and, compared to macro-particles, show unique physical, chemical, biological and mechanical properties which significantly extend the range of practical applications. The paper presents the applicability of engineered nanoparticles in the defence industry and concerns related to their release into the environment.

Sustainable development of high nature value areas promotes the use of resources and services tha... more Sustainable development of high nature value areas promotes the use of resources and services that rely on the unique assets of a particular ecosystem without undermining its integrity. Implementing innovative technologies, especially in the field of renewable energy sources, supports this process and helps to preserve environmentally valuable areas such as semi-natural grasslands. This study employs the ecosystem services valuation method to assess the environmental impacts of implementation of innovative IFBB technology in the Notec River Valley of western Poland as a part of a proposed implementation potential analysis framework. Six different categories of ecosystem services were analysed. Results show that implementing IFBB technology has a positive impact on the local ecosystem, generates additional value for potential investors, and thus could affect the perception of a renewable energy generation technology as being viable to implement.

The main function of food packaging is to maintain food’s quality and safety. The use of active p... more The main function of food packaging is to maintain food’s quality and safety. The use of active packaging, including antimicrobial materials, can significantly extend the shelf life of food. Many of these packaging solutions are based on the application of polymer films containing metal nanoparticles (e.g., Ag, Au, Cu) or metal oxides (e.g., TiO2, ZnO, MgO). However, the use of iron nanoparticles is rarely mentioned. In the study, polylactide (PLA) films containing zero-valent iron (ZVI) were made by casting method. Pure PLA films and PLA films with the addition of Fe2O3 were used as comparative materials. The composition and structure of ZVI/PLA films were evaluated with scanning electron microscopy. The XRD spectra performed on ZVI/PLA films confirmed the presence of iron in the packaging material and revealed their oxide form (Fe2O3). The best option currently seems to be the transition from a linear economy to a circular economy. However, there is no current agreed global vision on how to complete the circle. Therefore, it seems necessary to introduce a standard management system in the field of circular economy. The goal of this paper is to contribute with an overview of existing norms regarding circular economy and to assess the possibility of using them to create the ISO standards.
