This is brilliant news, hopefully I'll spot when it starts. I loved this show when I was a teenager, it started a major crush on Gary Cole which I still have to this day <3<3<3

Wish some channel would show American Gothic again. Wonderful, bit of a different part to Jack Killian!

    Marvellous show, I loved it.

The show would still work today if they remade it.

It was first broadcast on Saturday 28th January 1989 @ 9.35pm

Blimey the BBC showing a decent show on a Saturday night

OK it was 32 years ago!

For those interested episode 1 is available on You Tube so have no idea why Forces are not showing it as it details how he become a talk show host

How long is the episode duration?

It's not a feature length one is it?

Do Forces do 'feature length '?

Standard one-hour slot at that time.

48 minutes which " hour long dramas " were then, now they are 38 - 40 minutes

Awesome! One of my favourite shows as a kid. I've always hoped a DVD set might appear.

A resounding 'yes', given the number of times they've shown the V mini-series.......the first episode of Dempsey And Makepeace was double length and they've shown that multiple times. As to them not showing MC ep 1 I cant imagine it being for content so I'm guessing at a rights issue?

edit: having said I don't think it's content I remember when they ran Starsky And Hutch they didn't show the 'playboy island' episode , whereas Sony Channel had no problem showing it, so it COULD be content I suppose.

I've just watched the first episode on YouTube (Thanks for the tip @Alan51!) and had to have a hard word with myself to stop myself carrying on and binge watching the whole series. Better to wait and see it properly on a big screen in decent quality.

The good old days when (non scifi) imports were shown on prime time bbc1 instead of soaps and reality nonsense

Which was only stopped by the commercial channels pressuring the Govt. so they could buy them all.

To be fair, whether the TVL-fee-funded BBC should have shown so many US imports - some in primetime - is debatable. But probably best not in this thread :)

What's it about? Is it based on the film of the same (or similar) name?

It's about a police detective who leaves the force after a personal tragedy and is hired as a late night radio host by an ambitious businesswoman. He is supposed to be the voice of the public but ends up - inevitably - becoming involved in their stories and with her. Each episode ends with him reflecting on what that week's story live on air.

I liked it a lot and Gary Cole - the original choice for the Crockett role in Miami Vice - is one of the great unsung heroes of 80s TV.

It was great Saturday night TV when I was stuck in the house. I wonder if the "AIDS" episodes will air. They were controversal at the time and now outright offensive.
I think the end of the show was when the actress playing Devon became pregnant and left the show. The chemistry and dynamic between her replacement, Jack and Billy wasnt the same.

Some great episodes though, I remember the 1989 Earthquake episode (which probably aired in 1991 on BBC) and the ahead of its time story when Devon was stalked and the law protected the stalker.

I wonder if another US import from the same time Paradise / Guns of Paradise will ever be picked up over here. I don't think the BBC ever completed the run.

Thank you for the YouTube prompt. I was absolutely obsessed with the show as a teenager. I'd forgotten how good it was! I shall try to catch the rest on Forces.

After watching the first episode did anything strike you as to why Forces TV aren't showing it?

Being sad, I looked up the original bbc airdate for the pilot. It premiered the same night as the 7th season of bergerac. Two quality programmes with just the news separating them.

No, nothing really controversial, too close to current news topics or anything else that might be a reason not to show it.
