My mother. She was very patriotic and politically involved. She taught me how to become a patriotic American and to fold the American Flag properly. She encouraged me to enter the political arena and praised my accomplishments. She encouraged me to serve my country in the United States Navy. If she were alive today, she would be thrilled to see just how far I have come and to see the large number of elected officials that I have helped get elected over the years.
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
How I Won My Primary Election, Before Election Day', by Maggie-Judith Campbell This book includes the steps I took to rid my crowded State Assembly race in 2017 of 6 additional candidates to become the first multi-ethnic Repubilcan Nominee in San Diego County. I wrote this book in support of candidates who will be seeking office for the first time and candidates running in a crowded race. It warns candidates of who and what to avoid and the top 10 - 12 steps they must take to obtain success in the primary election. It is the second political book I have written.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
1. One who represents everyone in their district and not just one community. 2. One who puts families and their safety first. 3. A person who means what she states and states what she means. 4. One who will turn on a dime to get things done and to keep their word.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
1. Navy Veteran 2. Businessowner for over 20 years. 3. More than 30 combined experience working in the military, legal, evangelical ministry as an ordained pastor, Trauma Counseling, and the banking industries. 4. The founder of the Republican Women Alliance with the mission to support the political campaigns of conservative Republican Women, and train newcomers.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
1. To be open, honest and supportive of the people in their district. 2. To leave no stone unturned to accomplish what they promised they would do when they were campaiging. 3. To always remember that it is not about them, the officeholder. It is all about the people of your district that voted for you of whom you must represent to the best of your ability.
What legacy would you like to leave?
My legacy is a work in process. Once can not really say what legacy they will leave as we will not be here to see the effects of our lives on our families, friends and the community. One can only hope and pray for the best and spend their life on earth doing all that they can to make life a better places for those left behind after we are gone.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
As a child, I lived very close to the community high school where there was a large auditorium. My mother was asked to sing the Star Spangled Banner during a school event. Her voice was beautiful. When she sang, her voice flowed throughout the community for a great distance. People not present at the event could hear her sing and spoke of this day for many years thereafter with pride. This memory has been with me all of my life. When I hear someone singing this song and if the singer is doing a great job, I am suddenly back in my home community standing proudly, listening to my mother sing the greatest song of all time. I thank God for that memory and the inheritence of her speaking and singing voice.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
My mother was my first boss and my first job was as a student day camp counselor.
What happened on your most awkward date?
My most awkward memory was during my enlistment in the United States Navy. I was encouraged by my shipmates and friends to enter a talent contest. I selected 2 songs that were performed by the late singer, Whitney Houston of which I could sing without much effort. When I took the stage, I sang the song beautifully. Then suddenly during one of the high notes, my throat clogged due to the cool air blowing in my face. Inside I was horrified as I pushed through the clogged throat quickly as if nothing had happended, finished the song and won 3rd place. Everyone was happy for me and cheered me on, but on the inside I felt awkward. As I look back on it, I should have asked that the air be turned off. I should have move more on the stage to get away from cool air. From that day forward, before singing or speaking, I make sure that no air is blowing in my face that would cause my throat to ever crack again.
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
As a Christian, Christmas is my favorite holiday for many reasons. It brings back family memories of singing in my family of Christmas songs, large dinners prepared by my grandparents and parents and celebrating with my siblings and a large group of cousins and friends. It represents some of happier times in my past and present life as I brought those memories forward into my own family with my children and grandchildren.
What is your favorite book? Why?
The Holy Bible is my favorite book because it has the answer to everything one may encounter in our lives. It is not a book to read. It is however a book to study so that you understand the messages presented.
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
This is not my desire.
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
Spending time with my family and revceiving ample rest.
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
The Star Spangled Banner
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
My paternal grandfather once said to me, "Learn everything you can, about everything that you can, because you never know what you will end up doing in life." I took that advice literally. I set out to do just as he advised. In doing so, I completed my education up to the Master's level, became a politician, joined the military, worked as a counselor, became an ordained Pastor in evangelical ministry and opened a church, received a certification as a Para-Professional, became an accomplished singer, author, script writer and filmmaker and became a successful businessowner for many years, to name a few. My challenge has been to focused on just one profession at a time. I can not seem to do this because I am a multi tasker. Because I am a Native American and multi-ethnic, as a child the elders in my community referred to the numerous professions or interests in my life as Bears. The way that I deal with my multi-talents is by placing all other Bears to sleep while I focused on two or three Bears at the same time. It is challenge. It has worked for me over the years.
