Conviction on wire fraud charges (2019)

On October 2, 2019, Katrina Brown and Reggie Brown (no relation) were found guilty of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, aiding and abetting mail and wire fraud, and aiding and abetting money laundering. The jury also found Katrina Brown guilty of attempted bank fraud and making false statements to a federally insured financial institution.[6] The pair were charged in May 2018 for incorporating businesses that "performed no legitimate business" and using the businesses to receive loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration, which were allegedly funneled back to Katrina Brown. The indictment alleged that Reggie Brown also used funds from the SBA loans "despite selling no goods to or providing no legitimate services." It said the federal government would seek forfeiture of property from both city council members amounting to $754,613. Attorneys for both city council members denied the allegations. City Council President Anna Lopez Brosche removed both members from their committee assignments following the indictment and Republican Gov. Rick Scott suspended them on June 1, 2018.[7][1]
