Van Ayres is the superintendent of Hillsborough County Public Schools. Ayres was appointed interim superintendent in 2023, and started serving on November 2, 2023. Ayres' previous career experience includes working in the district as the Chief of Strategic Planning and Partnerships, deputy superintendent, principal, assistant principal, and as a science teacher.[1][2]
Past superintendents
- Addison Davis was the superintendent of Hillsborough County Public Schools from March 2020 until his retirement in 2023.[2] Davis' previous career experience includes working as the superintendent for Clay County Schools and the chief of schools for the Duval County Public Schools. He has also worked as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal.[3]
- Jeff Eakins was the superintendent of Hillsborough County Public Schools from 2015 to 2020. Eakins was appointed superintendent on July 1, 2015. Eakins' previous career experience includes working as a teacher, principal, and deputy superintendent.[4]
School board
The Hillsborough County Public Schools Board of Education consists of seven members elected to four-year terms. Members from Districts 1 through 5 are elected by district, and members from Districts 6 and 7 are elected at large.[5]

Elections
Elections are held on a staggered basis in the November general election.[6]
Four seats on the board were up for general election on November 5, 2024. A primary was scheduled for August 20, 2024.

Academic performance
Each year, state and local education agencies use tests and other standards to assess student proficiency.
