Primaries by state

The attorney general is the only top-level state executive office besides the governor to be found in all 50 states. As the state's chief legal officer, the attorney general is responsible for enforcing state law and advising the state government on legal matters. In many states, attorneys general play a large role in the law enforcement process. Out of the 43 states in which the attorney general is directly elected, 10 held elections for the position in 2020.

Of those 10 attorney general seats, five were held by Democrats prior to the November 2020 elections and five were held by Republicans. Montana Attorney General Tim Fox (R) was the only attorney general unable to run for re-election in 2020 due to term limits.
