An effort to recall Dennis Egan from his position as mayor of Red Wing, Minnesota, was launched in February 2013. Three weeks after the recall campaign was initiated, Egan resigned from his post.

Background

While serving as mayor, Egan accepted a position as executive director of the Minnesota Industrial Sand Council, a corporate lobbying firm for the fracking industry. Expanded sand mining operations are a controversial issue in Red Wing, which is located in the heart of frac sand territory. When Egan accepted a post as a fracking lobbyist, some Red Wing residents and city council members demanded Egan's resignation due to a perceived conflict of interest. At a headed city council meeting in early February, council member Michael Schultz asked the mayor, "Do you want to be the mayor of Red Wing or the executive director of the sand council?" The council voted unanimously to order an investigation of Egan's ties to the fracking industry.

A recall petition was taken out against Egan, but three weeks after the initial turmoil about a potential conflict of interest, Egan announced his resignation. Egan said, "I believe that a mayor must live to a higher standard than just avoiding conflicts of interest...If a mayor’s activities serve as a distraction or roadblock for the city, the public is not well-served.” After Egan's resignation, the city council dropped their investigation, and the recall petition was rendered null-and-void.
