David Bettencourt is the New Hampshire Commissioner of Insurance. Bettencourt assumed office on September 20, 2023. Bettencourt's current term ends on June 9, 2028.

The New Hampshire Executive Council appointed Bettencourt New Hampshire Commissioner of Insurance on September 20, 2023, replacing Chris Nicolopoulos.[1]

Bettencourt is a former Republican member and Majority Leader of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, representing Rockingham 4 District from 2004 until his resignation on May 26, 2012. He cited personal and professional commitments as reason for his resignation.[2]

Biography

David Bettencourt earned bachelor's degrees in political science and communication from the University of New Hampshire and a juris doctor from the University of New Hampshire in 2015. Bettencourt's career experience includes working as a deputy commissioner with the New Hampshire Insurance Department, the director of policy of the Office of Governor Chris Sununu, the president of Bettencourt & Associates, and a New Hampshire columnist with the Valley Patriot.[3][4]

On November 2, 2010, Bettencourt won election to the New Hampshire House of Representatives.[5][6]

Bettencourt advanced past the September 14 primary election. On November 4, 2008, Bettencourt won election to the New Hampshire House of Representatives from Rockingham County District 4, which sends thirteen representatives to the New Hampshire House of Representatives, by finishing with the highest vote total in the election. Bettencourt received 10,390 votes. The other winning candidates from District 4 were Mary Griffin (R) with 10,171 votes, Charles McMahon (R) with 9,297 votes, Anne Priestley (R) with 9,197 votes, Ronald Belanger (R) with 9,155 votes, Anthony DiFruscia (R) with 9,098 votes, Russell Ingram (R) with 8,367 votes, Robert Elliott (R) with 8,324 votes, Mark Pearson (R) with 8,293 votes, Margaret Crisler (R) with 7,886 votes, Walter Kolodziej (R) with 7,744 votes, David Bates (R) with 7,674 votes, and Carolyn Webber (D) with 7,624 votes.
