Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated Utah's U.S. Senate race as safely Republican. Incumbent Mike Lee (R) defeated Misty Snow (D), Stoney Fonua (Independent American), and Bill Barron (Independent) in the general election on November 8, 2016. Lee faced no primary challenger, while Snow defeated Jonathan Swinton to win the Democratic nomination. The primaries took place on June 28, 2016. Jade Tuan Quoc Vo (D) was eliminated at the party convention on April 23, 2016.[2][3]
