William Furgeson
William Royal Furgeson, Jr. was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas. He joined the court in 1994 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. He was reassigned to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas in 2008.[1] Furgeson took on senior status on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas in 2008, and retired on May 31, 2013.[2][3]
Education
A native Texan, Furgeson graduated from the Texas Tech University in Lubbock with his bachelor's degree in 1964 and later graduated from the University of Texas School of Law with his Juris Doctor degree in 1967. Furgeson also served as a active duty U.S. Army Captain from 1967 to 1969. Furgeson in the Army attained rank of Captain and served a year in Vietnam and earned the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service upon honorable discharge.[4]
Professional career
Furgeson began his political career as a Assistant county attorney for Lubbock in 1969 and also served as a Law clerk for former Federal District Judge Halbert Woodward in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas from 1969 to 1970 before later becoming a Private practice attorney licensed in the State of Texas from 1970 to 1993. Furgerson worked for the El Paso based law firm of Kemp, Smith, Duncan & Hammond Law Firm from 1970 to 1994.[4]
Judicial career
Western District of Texas
Furgeson was nominated by President Bill Clinton on November 19, 1993, to a new seat created by 104 Stat. 5089 which was approved by Congress. Furgeson was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 10, 1994, on a Senate vote and received commission on March 11, 1994.
Northern District of Texas
Furgeson was later reassigned to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas. He assumed senior status soon after, on November 30, 2008, and later retired on May 31, 2013.[4][3]
