Pam Stewart
Pam Stewart is the former Florida commissioner of education. She was appointed to replace former Commissioner Tony Bennett following his resignation on August 1, 2013. She submitted her resignation on December 4, 2018.[1] Stewart previously served a term as interim commissioner from September 1, 2012 to January 14, 2013.[2][3]
In March 2017, Stewart was appointed to the Florida Constitution Revision Commission, a 37-member commission that reviews and proposes changes to the Florida Constitution.[4]
Biography
Stewart began her career as a teacher in 1975, including working as an elementary school teacher in Ward-Highlands. From there she went on to become a guidance counselor, district teaching specialist, assistant principal, and principal. From 2004-2009 Stewart served as deputy chancellor for educator quality at the Florida Department of Education. She then became deputy superintendent for academic services for the St. Johns County School District. In 2011, she returned to the state Department of Education to become chancellor of public schools.[2]

Political career
Florida Commissioner of Education (2012-2013, 2013-2018)
Steward served as interim Florida commissioner of education from September 1, 2012 to January 14, 2013. She was replaced by Tony Bennett, the former Republican Indiana superintendent of public instruction.[5] Bennett subsequently resigned his post, effective August 1, 2013, and Stewart was reinstated as interim commissioner for an indefinite period beginning September 1, 2013. The Florida Board of Education changed her title from "interim commissioner" to "commissioner" on September 17, 2013. Stewart resigned from her post on December 4, 2018.[6][3]

The Florida Commissioner of Education is a state executive position in the Florida state government. The commissioner serves as the chief educational officer of Florida and administrative head of the Florida Department of Education.
Florida Constitution Revision Commission (2017-2018)
In March 2017, Stewart was appointed to the Florida Constitution Revision Commission (CRC) by Florida Governor Rick Scott, a Republican.[7]
About the commission
The Florida Constitution Revision Commission is a 37-member commission provided for in the state constitution that reviews and proposes changes to the Florida Constitution.[8] The CRC refers constitutional amendments directly to the ballot for a public vote.[9] The commission convenes every 20 years.[8] Members of the commission travel to different parts of Florida to perform research and receive public testimony before recommending these ballot measures.[10]
The Constitution Revision Commission of 2017-2018 was composed of 37 members. Gov. Rick Scott, a Republican, appointed 15 members of the CRC. President of the Florida Senate, Joe Negron (R), appointed nine members. Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, Richard Corcoran (R) appointed nine members. Jorge Labarga, chief justice of the Florida Supreme Court, appointed three members.[11]

Stewart was appointed as interim Florida commissioner of education by the Florida Board of Education on August 2, 2012, following the resignation of Gerard Robinson. Robinson stepped down after serving in the position for a little over a year.[12] On August 1, 2013, Steawart was reappointed to the position following the abrupt resignation of Robinson's successor, Tony Bennett.
