Nelson S. Roman is a judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. He joined the court in 2013 after a nomination from President Barack Obama. At the time of nomination, he was a judge on the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, First Department. He was appointed to this position by Governor Paterson on September 24, 2009.[1][2][3][4]
Education
Judge Roman grew up in New York City in the Bronx. He received his B.A. degree in political science from Fordham University (Rosehill Campus). From 1982 to 1989, he worked as a police officer in the South Bronx precincts. He then received his J.D. degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1989.[1]

Roman was appointed on September 20, 2012 by Barack Obama to a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York vacated by Richard Berman.[3] Obama commented on the nomination:
“ | I am pleased to nominate these distinguished individuals to serve on the United States District Court bench. I am confident they will serve the American people with integrity and a steadfast commitment to justice.[5][6] | ” |
Roman's nomination was returned to the president on January 3, 2013. The nomination was resubmitted on January 4, 2013.[7]
Roman was rated Substantial Majority Well Qualified, Minority Qualified by the American Bar Association. He had a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on January 23, 2013, and you can find his Committee Questionnaire available here and his Questions for the Record available here.[7]
On May 9, 2013, the United States Senate confirmed Nelson S. Roman to an Article III post for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York with a vote of 97-0.[7]
