Two of the seven seats on the North Kansas City Schools Board of Education were up for general election on April 5, 2016. Incumbents Terry Ward and Terry Stone filed for re-election. They faced challenger Judy Wartick on the ballot.[1] Wartick and Ward won seats in the election.

The North Kansas City Schools Board of Education consists of seven members who are elected at large to staggered three-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on April 5, 2016. Two seats were up for general election. The general election will be canceled if the number of candidates equals the number of board vacancies. [2]

An individual must be a registered voter in order to vote in a school election. In order to vote, a person must be 18 years of age or older, must be a citizen of the United States, and must reside in the school district for 30 days. School board candidates must be at least 24 years of age, have lived in the state for one year, and cannot be a convicted felon.[2]

North Kansas City Schools is located in northwest Missouri in Clay County. The county seat of Clay County is Liberty. Clay County was home to 233,682 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[5] The district was the fifth-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 19,726 students.[6]

Clay County outperformed the state of Missouri in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 30.6 percent of Clay County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 26.2 percent for Missouri as a whole.
