Two seats on the North Kansas City Schools school board were up for general election on April 8, 2014. Incumbent and Board President Joe Jacobs and challenger Dixie Youngers defeated challenger Brian Mercer for the two available seats. Incumbent Kevin Corlew initially filed for his seat, but withdrew after deciding to run for Missouri House District 14.[1]

North Kansas City Schools is located in Clay County, Mo.

North Kansas City Schools is located in northwest Missouri in Clay County. The county seat of Clay County is Liberty. Clay County is home to 230,473 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[2] In the 2011-2012 school year, North Kansas City Schools was the fifth-largest school district in Missouri and served 19,133 students.[3]

Demographics

Clay County outperformed the rest of Missouri in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 30.6 percent of Clay County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.2 percent for Missouri as a whole. The median household income in Clay County was $60,936 compared to $47,380 for the state of Missouri. The poverty rate in Clay County was 9.0 percent compared to 15.5 percent for the entire state.[2]

Voter and candidate information

The North Kansas City school board consists of seven members elected at-large to three-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on April 8, 2014, for two seats. Three seats were on the ballot in 2015.

Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on December 17, 2013. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was January 21, 2014, and the deadline for candidate certification was January 28, 2014.[5]

Endorsements

Incumbent Joe Jacobs and challenger Brian Mercer were endorsed by The Kansas City Star on March 30, 2014.[6] The Missouri National Education Association endorsed Jacobs and Dixie Youngers.[7]

Campaign finance

Dixie Youngers received $1,512.45 in campaign contributions and spent $1,408.62, leaving her with $103.83 on hand. She was the only candidate to file a finance report with the Missouri Ethics Commission.[8]

Issues in the district

Year-round school

In November 2013, two North Kansas City elementary schools opted to implement year-round schooling in order to see greater achievement gains. Instead of getting a nine-week summer break, students will get a break of four weeks in June and July; the implementation process could begin as early as 2015. North Kansas City Schools will be the only district in Missouri to have year-round schooling.[9]
