Dan Clemens is the superintendent of North Kansas City Schools. Clemens was appointed superintendent on July 1, 2016. Clemens' previous career experience includes working in the district as the assistant superintendent of administrative services and as a middle school principal.[1][2][3]

Past superintendents

  • Todd White was the superintendent of North Kansas City Schools from 2008 to 2015. White's previous career experience included working as the district's deputy superintendent.[4]

Members of the North Kansas City Board of Education are elected to three-year terms. Elections are held in April.

Two seats on the board are up for election on April 8, 2025. The filing deadline was December 31, 2024.

Public participation in board meetings

The North Kansas City Schools Board of Education maintains the following policy on public testimony during board meetings:[6]

“ Public Comment

At the first regular meeting each month, time shall be provided for public comments immediately after the chairperson calls the meeting to order. The following rules will be applied to the public comment portion of the meeting:

  • The period set aside for this public participation shall not exceed one-half hour.
  • Any non-Board member who wishes to speak during the official part of the meeting must register to do so. A request card shall be provided for this purpose and shall be submitted to the Public Information Officer of the district prior to the start of the meeting. It shall identify the speaker and the agenda item to be addressed. The Public Information Officer shall submit all request cards to the superintendent prior to the start of the meeting.
  • A person or persons may speak only once on an agenda item.
  • Persons addressing the Board are asked to keep their remarks concise and to the point. Therefore, the Board establishes a time limit of three minutes for each speaker without the consent of the Board.
  • Only items from the posted agenda may be discussed.

In the event the Board believes that the normal flow of business is being unnecessarily delayed, it may waive public participation by majority vote.[7]

Noteworthy events

2013: Year-round school

In November 2013, two North Kansas City elementary schools opted to implement year-round school years with the goal of greater achievement gains for students. Instead of getting a nine-week summer break, students would have a break of four weeks in June and July. The implementation process began in 2015. At the time of implementation, North Kansas City Schools was the only district in Missouri to have year-round schooling.[12][13]
