I was born and raised in Nebraska. I attended public school in Scottsbluff through high school. In 2000, I moved to Omaha and studied elementary education at Creighton University. I am a former teacher and current mental health practitioner who cares a great deal about public education. Throughout my teaching career of fifteen years, I obtained two master's degrees from UNO and one master's degree from UNL. I have held a variety of positions within education. I was a traditional teacher for fifteen years in parochial and public school settings. I taught mathematics at Metro Community College as an adjunct instructor. I have been a substitute teacher, and I am currently a student teacher supervisor for University of Nebraska Omaha. As I began my new career as a mental health practitioner, I made the decision to run for Nebraska State Board of Education, so I can continue to advocate for our students, teachers, families, and state education system.
  • Teacher Recruitment & Teacher Retention: We need to continue creating pathways to recruit teachers and support and respect our current teachers. By focusing on both recruitment and retention, we can cultivate a strong and resilient education workforce equipped to meet the needs of our students and communities now and in the future.
  • Parent and Community Engagement: This is vital for enhancing success and promoting transparency in education. Encouraging partnerships among schools, parents, and communities fosters a collaborative environment that supports students' academic and holistic development. Additionally, promoting transparency and communication between the board of education and the public builds trust and ensures that stakeholders are informed and involved in decision making processes, ultimately leading to a stronger and more cohesive education system.
  • Curriculum and Standards: It is essential to prioritize rigorous, up-to-date standards that cater to the diverse needs of all students. This involves ensuring that state curriculum standards are continually reviewed and adjusted to reflect evolving educational needs and standards. Additionally, supporting initiatives to incorporate diverse perspectives, representation, and experiences into the curriculum promotes inclusivity, enriching the learning experience for all students while preparing them to thrive.
My personal passion for education policy is deeply rooted in my experiences as a Nebraska public school student and my ongoing work with students, teachers, and administrators. This firsthand exposure has fueled my commitment to ensure that education policies effectively serve all students, regardless of their backgrounds or circumstances. My dedication stems from a genuine concern for the well-being and success of public schools. I am committed to supporting policies that promote equity and opportunity for every learner.
My very first job was working at a day care in Scottsbluff, when the minimum wage was $4.25/hour. I worked there through high school until I moved to Omaha for college.
Having a background in education along with strong analytical skills, effective communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively, advocacy skills, strategic thinking and planning skills, cultural competence and sensitivity, and ethical leadership are all necessary skills that will be most helpful for the holders of this office.
