Candidate Connection

Marcus Rech participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on March 27, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Marcus Rech's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Stop the outsourcing of jobs

2) Greatly reduce pain pill prescriptions to stop creating future addicts.
3) Modernize and speed up the education system[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Labor, education, healthcare.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Marcus Rech answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

Rand Paul, Donald Trump, Thomas Sowell.[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
Wealth poverty and politics[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Integrity, the willingness to listen, and not forgetting who his/her bosses really are (the people).[3]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I have a background in entrepreneurship, real estate, and my family gives me an excellent perspective on small business and helps me relate to the constituents here in house district 42.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Service to ones constituents, thoughtfulness, thoroughness, and integrity.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
That of change[3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
George W. Bush's inauguration. 9[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Working at a grocery store in high school. About 2 years.[3]
What happened on your most awkward date?
We ended up going out to wendys after getting lost in Cincinnati.[3]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Christmas! Great memories and a wonderful time.[3]
What is your favorite book? Why?
The Bible[3]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
Batman[3]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My computer, its a portal to most of the information in the world![3]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Oh wow... a Christmas song called "do you know what I know". I believe thats the name anyway.[3]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Balancing idealism with the realities of life.[3]
(For non-Nebraska candidates) What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?
The senate republicans are much less responsive and more liberal than the house republicans. The house republicans, since they have to run every two years - are much more responsive and easy to get ahold of.[3]
Do you believe that it's beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
No. I think you just need life experience, outside of academia or the political environment so you can relate to the rest of the country and or state.[3]
What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?
The opioid issue and good paying jobs.[3]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
The governor should listen to the legislature as they are closer to the people.[3]
Do you believe it's beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Yes - you need to cross party lines if need be to serve the people and not the establishment.[3]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
Reducing the advantage and or standardizing the geographic size of the districts. Some districts are huge while others, like mine, comprise only a third of a county.[3]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Education, Finance.[3]
If you are not currently a member of your party's leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
If elected, I would like to take some time to learn the ropes first.[3]
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
I am my own man.[3]
Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?
Who knows. Politics is so fluid. If you ask me what I want to do in 10 years everything could change completely.[3]
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you've heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
I've spoken with a gentleman named Scott Weidle, who lost his son to opiates. His son was a good man, but he was prescribed painkillers at a young age and even though he was able to get clean - eventually overdosed. This hit me close to home as I have a 3 month old baby boy and I want to make sure that this never happens to him or anyone else again.[3]
