Collapse all
|In 2020 I retired to run for the New Mexico State Senate to address the dire healthcare issues that challenge New Mexico. I eliminated cost sharing for all mental health and addiction programs, started the University of New Mexico School of Public Health, legislated the most robust Mental Health Parity law in the nation, and double Medicaid payments to retain primary care and behavioral health providers.
In short most of my career has been dedicated to improving health of challenged populations, leading multiple community services such as chairman of the United Way Campaign, and teaching and speaking nationally on healthcare issues.- I will bring healthcare providers back to New Mexico!
- Public safety is a right just the same as healthcare is. I will participate in a bipartisan way to strengthen our criminal laws, increase our police and justice system to put criminals away, and assure housing and rehabilitation resources for those willing to change.
- I will lead vastly increasing our resources to nurture and engage with youth challenged by mental health.
NM must pass constitutional amendments to pay legislators and significantly lengthen sessions. The legislature does not reflect the state, and more talent and experience must come to bare. Most critical is to hire highly educated and experienced individuals who can staff the various committees. There is virtually no research or data for us to study and create problem solving legislation. Such staff should also oversee the Executive branches as to the execution of the laws passed and their effectiveness. These staff and legislators need to work hand in hand with departmental staff to define issues and challenges, develop solutions, and come to agreement on appropriations; regardless of party affiliation. New Mexico has to stop topping the lists of poor status and outcomes nationally
Education must improve steadily.
Creation of well paying jobs through unions and economic development is essential.
Reduction of crime and it's underlying causes.

Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
