From an early age, Lew Burdette began learning the ins and outs of business in his father’s family-owned grocery store. Later, this background would build a foundation for Lew to excel as a business leader. Opportunity grew into success during Lew’s 13-year career with Books-A-Million, holding several executive positions including Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. In 1998, Lew founded Kindred, a Christian retail superstore in Birmingham where he was President/Chief Executive Officer.

Since October of 2002, it has been the thrill of Lew’s career to lead King’s Home, a large Birmingham, Christian non-profit, where he has served as President. Lew’s business experience has helped King’s Home grow exponentially by quadrupling the number served of abused youth, moms, and children fleeing domestic violence. Lew has been involved in the daily management of essential areas such as strategic planning, financial expertise, operations, and Human Resource management. Yet, Lew’s greatest joy for more than 18 years at King’s Home is seeing God restore, heal and transform the lives of King’s Home residents escaping abuse and domestic violence.
  • Education is my top priority.
  • Better jobs follow better education.
  • Restore trust in government by ending corruption in Alabama.
Personally passionate about improving education, rural healthcare, prison reform, and bringing higher paying jobs to Alabama.

Campaign website

Burdette's campaign website stated the following:

Education
Raising Education from the Bottom

All Alabamians should believe in their ability to accomplish their dreams. This starts with a solid education that prepares our children for a life full of hope and opportunity. Quality of education at every level shapes our children for a bright future and better jobs.

Excellence in education must be our standard. Classroom instruction must reach the same level of excellence. Teachers need continued opportunities for development to assist with ever-changing challenges in the classroom. When children receive an excellent education, it changes their a) lifetime earning potential b) outlook on life c) and hope for the future.

Lew Burdette supports School Choice and believe every child deserves the opportunity for the best education possible. Community colleges need to refocus on a practical curriculum with supports trades like welding, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing. As a state, we need to evaluate the possible reorganization of enormous-sized school districts that are unmanageable and that fail to properly support individual schools.

For decades, Alabama has ranked at the bottom in Education. Alabama is currently 47th in state rankings of Education, this must change. In our state, 2 + 2 will always equal 4, and we will not allow the Critical Race Theory curriculum to be taught in our school systems. Quality education enables every child the opportunity to reach their dreams, creates a path for success, and a rewarding future.

Lew Burdette will work tirelessly to raise the standard of education for each and every young person in this state.

Creating Jobs
Lew grew up in the small town of Roanoke, Alabama, where his Dad taught him the value of hard work. From a very early age, he was sacking groceries in their family-owned grocery store. His administration will strongly support small business owners, and no one will more passionately defend small businesses than Lew will. He knows personally the hurt and financial ruin of losing a small business. In 2001, shortly after 9/11, Lew lost his own business. He fully understands the devastation of losing something that you have poured your heart and resources into. Small business owners have a friend in Lew, and they will not be shut down again.

Lew Burdette will work tirelessly, to bolster a business environment, which will create higher-paying jobs. This will be especially true in rural areas, where he and so many Alabamians grew up. The only way to accomplish this is by fighting government overreach, eliminating excessive regulations, and lowering taxes to promote job growth.

He will be a champion of free enterprise, and fully support economic policies and regulatory reforms that stimulate the growth of jobs for all Alabamians.

Election Transparency
Alabama has a problem with politicians holding a job. In recent years, two governors have been forced to resign, one went to jail, and a Speaker of the House is in jail right now.

Did you know Alabama allows unlimited campaign contributions? Maybe that’s part of the problem. Kay Ivey has received more than $5,000,000 in contributions greater than $10,000 since she first ran for Governor. Lew has had people offer to donate $100,000, but he has capped contributions at $10,000 to reinforce that elections aren’t bought, they are earned.

Corruption is about the only thing Alabama ranks high at when compared to other states. Let’s change that. Lew Burdette will make Alabama better at education, at jobs, at healthcare, and at vocational training.

2nd Amendment
Lew was shot, kidnapped, stabbed and left for dead in an abandoned well at age 15 but he is a strong supporter of gun rights and the Second Amendment. Lew believes Alabamians have the right to be safe, the right to be free from fear, and the right to protect their love ones!

Healthcare
Alabama currently ranks #45 in Healthcare among state rankings. Health insurance and healthcare costs continue to rise each and every day. As your Governor, Lew will work to repeal and replace Obamacare and make sure that it is replaced with a comprehensive plan that will safeguard pre-existing conditions and patient rights.

Since 2010, 17 privately run hospitals have closed in Alabama since Obamacare was implemented. Alabama currently ranks #10 in states with the most rural hospital closures since 2005. Lew grew up in a small town in east Alabama, and he is passionate about rural healthcare. We must close the rural health care gap that exists in our State.

Lew Burdette will strive to develop realistic, conservative healthcare reform that will increase access to healthcare, lower prescription drug costs, and encourage competition between all healthcare providers in our State.

Sanctity of Life
Lew's deeply held Christian faith teaches him that all human life is sacred. Everyone has the right to life; a protection that can not and must not be violated.

Lew Burdette stands firm that life begins at conception and will fully support pro-life positions.

He will not waiver from protecting the unborn. As your Governor, he will passionately fight for those who have no voice.

Prison Reform
Our Alabama Prison System needs immediate reform. It is outdated, understaffed, and plagued by violence. In December of 2020, the Justice Department found that the Alabama Department of Corrections was in violation of the 8th Amendment’s prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment. As of 2017, the Homicide rate in our prisons was 8 times the national average. As of December 31, 2018, Alabama prisons housed 21,000 prisoners in facilities built to house 12,400. It is clear these are problems that desperately need to be addressed to avoid the intervention of the Federal Government. Inaction is not an option.

As your Governor, Lew Burdette will make sure that we use our resources to accomplish the objectives of reduced recidivism and improved public safety. His plan will be to reduce recidivism by providing help with addiction therapy and basic survival skills needed to succeed, by those released, which will reduce both the risk of reoffenders and also reduce the risk of jeopardizing public safety. His administration will supervise those released, specifically tailored to their risks of reoffending. Alabama's parole system must be equipped with the resources to know who should and should not be released.

Offenders who are churned in and out of the system become dependent on government assistance. We need to assist those with addiction, coupled with training them with educational life skills which will reduce reoffenders. We need to make sure that prisoners who are released do so under strict supervision. Those with addiction and or mental health issues need to receive the appropriate treatment and develop employable skills, only after serving an appropriate sentence for their crime. Strong supervision will instill personal responsibility. We must provide clear expectations and make sure that consequences are uniformly applied. All community corrections and re-entry programs should apply similar practices uniformly.

As your Governor, Lew will develop a long term, sustainable plan to better serve and rehabilitate the prison population. This plan will strengthen and improve public safety, and in turn, reduce the costs of an overcrowded prison population.

Mental Health
Today, 200,000 Alabamians suffer with mental illness, developmental disabilities, or substance abuse disorders. Alabama has a population of approximately 4.8 million people. Close to 4.1% of adults in Alabama live with serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression. Each of these individuals need access to resources and care to thrive. We must work to make sure they get the help that they need.

One in five Americans will experience mental health problems in their lifetime. We need to eliminate the stigma associated with the need for Mental Health treatment. Mental illness is not a character flaw. We must work every day to ensure that none of these Alabamians slip through the cracks or get lost in the system.

We have an opioid epidemic in this state that we must work tirelessly to eliminate. In 2021, CDC data released showed that overdose deaths were up 35%. The national average showed an increase of 30.9%. In 2018, Alabama providers wrote 97.5 opioid prescriptions for every 100 people – the highest rate in the nation. The prescription and use of highly addictive opioids must be strictly monitored, and we must do a better job of that.

Alabama suicide rate in 2019, was 16.4 per 100,000 persons, making suicide the 12th leading cause of death in our state. Alabama is consistently higher than the national average in this statistic. We must lower these numbers in our state with better public education of the risk factors and warning signs of those suffering with depression and suicidal tendencies.

Lew will work every day to help Alabama become a state where individuals suffering from mental illness have the proper safety net of resources, helping them get the treatment they need and deserve, with the goal that they will be thriving members of their communities.

1st Amendment
The First Amendment to the Constitution prevents the government from making laws that regulate an establishment of religion, or that would prohibit the free exercise of religion, abridge the freedom of speech, the freedom of the press, the freedom of assembly, or the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

It is easy to see what is happening in our country. There are evil forces seeking to destroy our culture, steal our freedoms, and divide our families. We are experiencing relentless assaults on our freedoms and our culture is in decline. We can not sit idly by and allow our freedoms to be taken from us.

It is time to limit government involvement in our lives so that we can live as free and happy people. Free to enjoy the life and liberties our Creator intended for us to have. As freedom-loving people, Lew is calling on all Alabamians to unite and protect our great state from the forces seeking to destroy our family values and cancel our voices. This is especially true as too big tech giants seem to only favor silencing conservative voices. As your Governor, Lew Burdette will be a strong defender of your 1st Amendment rights and freedoms.

Keeping Alabama Safe
In Alabama, we are proud of our law enforcement, military, and national guard. These brave individuals work to serve and protect all Alabamians. These honorable men and women go above and beyond the call of duty to keep our families and neighborhoods safe. Police help stop crime and bring criminals to justice.

Calls to defund the police are irresponsible and have been most damaging to the very communities experiencing the worst criminal activity. As your Governor, Lew Burdette will advocate for law enforcement accountability, and he will work to provide the highest levels of development and training for all officers. [2]
