Leonard I. Garth was a federal judge with the United States Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit. He joined the court in 1973 after being nominated by President Richard Nixon and served on senior status from June 30, 1986, until his death on September 22, 2016.[1]

Education

Garth graduated from Columbia University with his bachelor's degree in 1942 and later graduated from Harvard Law School with his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1952.[1]

Military service

Garth also served on active duty as a U.S. Army Lieutenant from 1943 to 1946.[1]

Professional career

Garth began his legal career as a private practice license in the State of New Jersey from 1952 until his nomination to the court in 1970. Garth also taught academically as a part-time lecturer at both Rutgers Law School and Seton Hall Law School.[1]

Judicial career

Third Circuit Court of Appeals

Garth was nominated by President Richard Nixon on July 19, 1973, to a seat vacated by Judge James Rosen as Rosen died in judicial service. Garth was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 3, 1973, and he received his commission on August 6, 1973. Garth later assumed senior status on June 30, 1986. He was succeeded in this position by Judge Morton Greenberg. Garth served as a senior judge until his death on September 22, 2016.[1]

District of New Jersey

Garth was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey by President Richard M. Nixon on July 22, 1969, to a seat vacated by Judge Thomas M. Madden. Garth was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 17, 1969, and he received his commission on December 18, 1969. He served on this court until August 29, 1973, upon his elevation to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Garth was succeeded in this position by Judge Herbert Stern.
