My name is Kathleen Crogan-Camara and I’m running for Massachusetts State Senate. I’ve lived in Randolph for 14 years and I have 3 grown children. I ran a beauty salon for 20 years and became a nurse after my daughter was severely injured in a car accident. I’ve spent years now working within the state system to get services for my daughter who has serious disabilities — my experience is that the system is very difficult to navigate and it’s difficult to get the right services for your loved one.
  • I am the only pro-choice candidate in this race. That means the incumbent votes anti-choice.
  • I am the only pro-LGBTQ+ candidate in this race. That means the incumbent votes anti-gay.
  • As a mom, a registered nurse, and a former small business owner, I will lead on issues of parenting, healthcare, and small business. The incumbent has not led. I will.
My life was turned upside down very suddenly when my 16-year-old daughter suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident. I was suddenly thrust into a world of hospital rooms, tears, bills, and fear. During this time of crisis, I decided to change careers and go into the medical field. That way, I would be able to better care for my daughter and help any other families who had gone through what I had. I became a CNA, then an LPN, then an RN -- not an easy mid-life career change while still running my salon!

I've encountered so many obstacles in getting good care for my daughter. State agencies and state programs were simply not there for us. Unfortunately, our State Senator did not provide any support -- his staff said "We're not going to do the heavy lift.". That was one of the main reasons I began to get involved in politics.

I believe our government should help people, not ignore them. Unfortunately, our current representation often neglects some of our basic needs. Our healthcare is getting more expensive, the climate crisis is getting worse, and housing costs are displacing so many of our neighbors. Meanwhile, people have more and more difficulty accessing the government departments they’ve paid for with their taxes, whether it’s unreturned calls or inaccessible red tape.

I understand how it feels to be ignored by politics as usual, and I know we can work together to ensure nobody else is left out.
I believe in collaboration. I believe that women in State Legislatures are better collaborators than men. I will build relationships with all my fellow State Senators.
African-American women have a three times higher rate of death related to childbirth, and disproportionately more complications during pregnancy. I will work to address that disparity as part of expanded healthcare for women during their reproductive years.

Senator Walter Timilty is aware of this issue, and when it came to the State Senate, Timilty voted for a 14-month study to investigate. That report came out in spring 2022 -- it confirmed that it's true that African-American women have a three times higher morbidity and mortality compared to white women. Every nurse already knew that, because it's been in nursing textbooks for decades. Kathleen thinks the State Senate should DO something about this issue, not just waste taxpayers' money on a 14-month study like Timilty supported.

When the report finally came out in spring 2022, it included a dozen recommendations, ranging from promoting doulas (birth assistants) to educating maternity doctors about the problem. Timilty chose inaction. Kathleen wants action!

In January 2023, Kathleen will introduce a dozen bills in the State Senate to match the dozen recommendations from the maternal health care report. This is why Massachusetts needs fewer establishment incumbents who do nothing to change the status quo, and why Massachusetts needs more nurses like Kathleen in the State Senate!
I will work to make changes in the system so it works for ALL people. I have spent months knocking on doors and speaking to you, the people. I spent my life running a business where I spoke to dozens of people a day, listening to new perspectives and stories. I am a registered nurse, where my job is to help those in need regardless of if I agree with them or not.

I believe our best days are ahead of us. Healthier, safer, cleaner communities are possible, but only if we choose to reject politics as usual. Please join my campaign and please vote for me in the Democratic primary on September 6th.
