Scorecards

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.

Resignation following wire fraud indictment (2018)

See also: Noteworthy criminal misconduct in American politics (2017-2018)

State Sen. Jeremy Hutchinson (R) resigned August 31, 2018, effective immediately, following a federal grand jury indictment of eight counts of wire fraud and four counts of filing false tax returns.[1] Hutchinson allegedly used campaign contributions for personal expenses, lied to donors about the use of their contributions, and falsified campaign finance reports. The indictment also accused him of underreporting his income between 2011 and 2014.[10]

A statement from Hutchinson's attorneys said that his "resignation is not an admission of wrongdoing nor should he be forced to resign because of an allegation. He is doing so simply to allow the people’s business in the State Capitol to go forward without unnecessary distraction."[1]

Hutchinson pleaded not guilty in court September 18.[11] On June 25, 2019, Hutchinson pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit federal program bribery.[12]
