James W. Brown is a judge of the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas Domestic Relations and Juvenile Division in Ohio. His current term ends on January 1, 2031.

Brown (Nonpartisan, Democratic Party) ran for re-election for judge of the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas Domestic Relations and Juvenile Division in Ohio. Brown won in the general election on November 5, 2024. He advanced from the Democratic primary on March 19, 2024.

Biography

Brown received his undergraduate degree from the Ohio State University in 1979 and his J.D. degree from the Ohio State University College of Law in 1982. Brown worked as an attorney in private practice from 1982 to 2014, specializing in domestic relations law. He was nominated to serve on the board of trustees for the Ohio Judicial College in 2018.[1][1]

Selection method

The 391 judges of the Ohio Courts of Common Pleas are all selected in an identical manner. Qualified individuals wishing to join the bench must participate in partisan primary elections followed by nonpartisan general elections.[2]

The chief judges of the Ohio Courts of Common Pleas are chosen by peer vote and serve for one year.[2]

Qualifications
To serve on an appellate or general jurisdiction court, a judge must be:[2]

  • a district or county resident (for court of appeals and common pleas judges);
  • at least six years practiced in law; and
  • under the age of 70.

Under the Ohio Constitution, a judge who reaches 70 years of age may be assigned by the chief justice to active duty, receiving payment on a per-day basis in addition to whatever retirement benefits he or she is entitled to.

What is your political philosophy?

Judge Brown’s longevity practicing in the domestic and juvenile relations sector provides a breadth of knowledge and experience that serves him well. Specifically, Judge Brown is able to understand the needs of the parties as well as the attorneys who practice before him.

In addition to serving on his numerous judicial appointments, the Judge is diligently working with numerous stakeholders in the Franklin County Court system to develop a centralized Domestic Violence Center to aid and facilitate services for Domestic Violence survivors. The Judge believes this project is of the utmost importance to those seeking safety in Franklin County, Ohio.

Is there anything you would like to add?

Judge Brown is “Highly Recommended” by the Columbus Bar Association’s Judicial Candidate Preference Poll. In his time on the bench, Judge Brown’s judicial skills have been evaluated in the Columbus Bar Association’s judicial performance polls participated in by practitioners who have appeared before him. In 2018, Judge Brown’s judicial performance was rated as the second highest in the Domestic Relations Court, tying for the second highest rating of the twenty-two Franklin County Common Pleas’ Judges. In 2016, Judge Brown tied for first as highest rated Domestic Relations Judge, which was also the highest rating amongst all twenty-two Franklin County Common Pleas’ Judges in 2016.
