Joseph Young was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. He joined the court in 1971 after being nominated by President Richard Nixon.[1] Young passed away on March 14, 2015.[2]

Education

Young received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College in 1948 and his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1951.[1]

Military service

Young served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 on active duty.[1]

Professional career

After law school, Young practiced law with the firm of Marbury, Miller and Evans in Baltimore, Maryland. From 1952 to 1972, he joined the law firm of Piper and Marbury, first as an associate from 1952 to 1958, then as partner from 1958 to 1971, and finally as managing partner from 1966 to 1971. Young also previously served as an instructor on a part-time basis at the Johns Hopkins University School of Law from 1954 to 1964.[3]

Judicial career

District of Maryland

Young was nominated by President Richard Nixon on July 19, 1971, to a seat vacated by Judge Robert Watkins. Young was confirmed by the United States Senate on July 29, 1971, and received commission on July 29, 1971. Young later assumed senior status on August 1, 1987.[1] Young was succeeded in this position by Judge Marvin Garbis.
