The History of Initiative & Referendum in Florida began in 1968, Florida adopted a new state constitution which included a provision allowing citizens to amend the constitution by initiative.
The initiative provision was first put to use in 1976, when voters adopted the Sunshine Amendment, sponsored by Governor Ruben Askew, requiring public disclosure of campaign contributions.
Initiative frequency
From 1976-2022, 38 initiated amendments appeared on Florida's ballots, of which, 34 were approved and eight were rejected.
