Diversify our economy, make healthcare more affordable and keep public lands in public hands.

I'm passionate about healthcare and mental healthcare in particular. I had a career in the mental health field as a provider and know firsthand what impact poor policy decisions can have on individual people.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
In terms of politicians both John McCain and Joe Biden. Both are Mavericks and put people first, above Party
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
The PBS production of "Dark Money" reflects my concerns about the regrettable Supreme Court decision to allow corporations to funnel as much money as they want into political campaigns without disclosure. "The Price of Civilization" by economist Jeffrey Sachs best reflects many of my political positions.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Honesty and integrity.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I have a proven track record of public service including three years active duty Army, 30+ years of public service with the Veterans Administration, and two terms on our local school board.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To be responsive to the needs of local constituents, regardless of their Party affiliation.
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like to have healthcare including mental healthcare more accessible and affordable.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
The assasination Of President Kennedy.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Paper delivery boy, for three years.
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
July 4th because we celebrate our freedom on that day.
What is your favorite book? Why?
The Heart of Everything There Is, which is the biography of Chief Red Cloud. It documents the fall of a great civilization.
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My recliner, where I do most of my reading.
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
That happens a lot. I don't have one in particular.
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Earning my graduate degree.

There are 60 seat in our House, 30 in the Senate.
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
Perhaps beneficial but not required.
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Economic diversification.
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
A collaborative relationship with the citizenry in mind.
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Yes. Legislators depend in information from their constituents and having a good relationship means that information will be valued.
What process do you favor for redistricting?
It should be non-partisan.
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Labor, Health and Social Services.
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
Senator John Schiffer.
Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?
No.
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
I met a young woman canvassing who had a complicated broken leg and had to declare medical bankruptcy. If we had expanded Medicaid in this state, she would have been covered.
