I have many vivid visual memories starting at age four. One that stands out is celebrating the 4th of July with my neighborhood. The day began with being awakened by someone hitting a whole roll of caps with a hammer! About noon, the kids decorated their bikes and wagons with crepe paper in preparation for an impressive sidewalk parade. My job each 4th of July was to proudly place a small flag in our mailbox for all to see. This particular year, my mother told me we needed to replace our flag, because Alaska and Hawaii had been added to the United States! I remember thinking it was amazing that our Country was still growing and that now we had an even 50 states making up our beautiful America. I've been a patriot ever since.
