Francis Joseph Boyle (1927-2006) was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island. He joined the court in 1977 after an appointment from Jimmy Carter. At the time of his appointment, he was a private practice attorney in Rhode Island. He served as chief judge from 1982-1992. He assumed senior status on December 1, 1992, and continued serving in that post until his death on September 11, 2006.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments

District of Rhode Island

Boyle was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on May 2, 1977, to a seat vacated by Edward Day; he was confirmed by the Senate on June 30, 1977, and received commission the next day. He served as chief judge from 1982-1992. He assumed senior status on December 1, 1992, and continued serving in that post until his death on September 11, 2006. Boyle was succeeded in this position by Mary Lisi.[1]
