David Alan Ezra is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the District of Hawaii. Ezra is sitting by a permanent designation of Chief Justice John G. Roberts on the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas in order to help with that court's workload. Ezra joined the District of Hawaii in 1988 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan.[1][2]
Early life and education
Born in Columbus, Ohio, Ezra graduated from St. Mary's University with his bachelor's degree in 1969 and obtained his J.D. degree from St. Mary's University School of Law in 1972.[1]
Military service
Ezra served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1971 to 1977.[1]

Ezra was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of Hawaii by President Ronald Reagan on November 18, 1987, to a seat vacated by Samuel King. Hearings on Ezra's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on April 28, 1988, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) on behalf of then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on May 12, 1988. Ezra was confirmed by the unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate on May 19, 1988, and he received his commission on May 20, 1988. From 1999 to 2005, Ezra served as the chief judge of the district court. He elected to take senior status beginning on June 27, 2012. He was succeeded in this position by Judge Derrick Kahala Watson.[1][4]
Western District of Texas
In 2012, Chief Justice John G. Roberts approved a permanent designation for Ezra to sit as a senior federal judge on the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas. Ezra has served as a senior judge on that court since January 2, 2013.[3]
